At a conference on Stress, Meditation, Addictions, and Self-Recovery, Dr William Stixrud spoke about how Transcendental Meditation (TM) can help young people recover from addictions to alcohol and drugs, especially those who use certain popular substances to self-medicate.

Dr Stixrud is a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of learning tension and social and emotional disorders in children and teenagers. He is frequent lecturer on topics related to neuropsychological assessment, learning disorders, brain development, and the effects of stress on the brain, and is the author of the book Plain Talk about Early Education and Development.

According to Dr Stixrud, abuse of substances teens don't perceive as hard drugs is not uncommon amongst those with ADHD. He shared a story of a young man about to graduate from high school.

A lot of adolescents with ADHD tell him, ' ''I do better,'' and what they typically mean by that is, ''It allows me not to worry about all the stuff I would otherwise worry about.'' '

Dr Stixrud sees teens who use certain drugs to manage stress and anxiety, but at great cost to their quality of life.

He said, 'What I tell kids with ADHD is, you can either create a life,' or continue using this substance—'it's your call. People with ADHD have enough difficulty marshalling their frontal lobe for goal-directed behaviour, that I think it's not possible to do both things.'

Instead, Dr Stixrud recommends using Transcendental Meditation to manage stress.

He shared the story of a young man who overcame a dependence on this substance with the help of the meditation technique. 'He got off to a rough start,' failed his courses and left college in the first year, and was using a large quantity of this drug. 'He was another kid who didn't want to,' Dr Stixrud said.

He learned Transcendental Meditation 'and the progress in his life has been fantastic the last year'. Even his mother, seeing her son's success, has been inspired to learn Transcendental Meditation.
