A recent conference for medical professionals in the Washington, DC, area focused on integrative medicine and the transformative effects of Transcendental Meditation on health.

The conference, The New Science of Meditation and Self-Healing: Transcendental Meditation and Mind-Body Medicine, was hosted by Stuart Rothenberg, MD, and featured speeches from Brian Berman, MD, Norman Rosenthal, MD, and Pamela Peeke, MD.

Dr Rothenberg, programme director for the Transcendental Meditation Health Professionals Association, introduced the night's talks and the conference's venue.

He said, 'We are delighted to be hosted tonight by the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine in this beautiful historic venue, Davidge Hall, which is the oldest continuously used medical education facility in the United States,' dating back to 1812.

Dr Berman, founder and director of the Center for Integrative Medicine, spoke about the centre's goals.

'Our focus has always been about enhancing patient care by bringing a holistic approach that values mind/body/spirit to what we do, and also by expanding treatment options for our patients,' he said. 'Some of these approaches come from ancient practices, things like Qigong, acupuncture, yoga, and meditation, which is the subject of tonight's talks.'

Dr Berman introduced the night's first speaker, Dr Norman Rosenthal, clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical School and bestselling author.

Dr Berman explained, 'Tonight Dr Rosenthal will focus on a variety of topics including managing stress, treating anger, anxiety, depression, and addiction, as well as achieving one's full potential and harmony in society.'

Dr Rosenthal spoke about doing all these things with the help of Transcendental Meditation. He spoke first about his own reintroduction to the technique.

'After a couple of months of regular practice [of Transcendental Meditation], I just became a much more even tempered person, less reactive, more energized, more creative, more alive. I thought, ''You know I really need to look into this,'' so I began to recommend it to various patients, and I did some research in it myself.'

Global Good News will continue to report on the University of Maryland conference on integrative medicine and Transcendental Meditation.
