At a recent conference titled The New Science of Meditation and Self-Healing: Transcendental Meditation and Mind-Body Medicine, Dr Brian Berman welcomed the featured speakers and gave a brief introduction to the unique Center for Integrative Medicine, which hosted the event.
In 1991, Dr Berman founded the University of Maryland's Center for Integrative Medicine, the first programme of its kind at an academic health centre in the United States. He is a leading pioneer of integrative medicine and has published in such journals as Archives of Internal Medicine and New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr Berman spoke at the beginning of the event. 'On behalf of the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine, we are delighted to host this event tonight and we're very fortunate to have two excellent speakers, Dr Norman Rosenthal and Dr Pamela Peeke, both experts in mind-body medicine.'
He also described in brief the focus of the department.
'Our focus has always been about enhancing patient care by bringing a holistic approach that values mind/body/spirit to what we do, and also by expanding treatment options for our patients. Some of these approaches come from ancient practices, things like acupuncture, yoga, and meditation, which is the subject of tonight's talks.'
Dr Rosenthal and Dr Peeke would be exploring the clinical applications of Transcendental Meditation in reducing stress and unlocking the mind's ability to promote health from within.
Before going on to introduce Dr Rosenthal, Dr Berman explained more about what integrative medicine is. 'It is really part of a personalized way of practising medicine, one that finds the best treatment approaches for each individual person, and working collaboratively with the person to strengthen their ways of healing, really enhancing their resilience and helping to lead a more balanced life.'
In addition to teaching these methods, the Center for Integrative Medicine also provides educational outreach.
Explained Dr Berman, 'We are also emphasizing [mind-body medicine] in our educational programmes that teach medical students, residents, and fellows, and also the public.'
