Transcendental Meditation research finds significant reduction in cardiac mortality

Transcendental Meditation has been shown to lower blood pressure and reverse the clogging of the arteries (atherosclerosis), but can these effects increase longevity?
At a conference on The New Science of Meditation and Self-Healing: Transcendental Meditation and Mind-Body Medicine', Norman Rosenthal, MD, posed this question to the audience of medical professionals. 'The answer appears to be yes,' he said.
Dr Robert Schneider, principal investigator in many of the studies on Transcendental Meditation and heart disease, followed up on subjects who participated in randomized controlled blood pressure studies he had conducted ten years before.
He found that 'there was a 23 per cent reduction in mortality and a 30 per cent reduction in cardiovascular mortality. Highly significant,' Dr Rosenthal said.
Dr Schneider and his colleagues repeated the process with a different group of subjects and found even more dramatic results—the study showed 'an almost 50 per cent reduction in heart attack, death, and stroke in people in their middle years who were . . . at risk for cardiac disease.'*
Dr Rosenthal noted that just adding Transcendental Meditation to subjects' daily routine resulted in these findings.
They were 'already taking everything: blood pressure medication, cholesterol medication. They are on a diet, they're seeing their doctors, they're doing exercise. They're instructed to do all these things, yet to just add this one variable makes this much difference. So that shows you how powerful [Transcendental Meditation] really is as a healing agent.'
He added, 'This is something worth considering. I would certainly [practise Transcendental Meditation] even if it wasn't as pleasant as it is, just for the cardiac benefits alone.'
* The study, 'Stress Reduction in the Secondary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease', was published in November 2012 in the American Heart Association journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.
