'There are different categories of meditation,' said Norman Rosenthal, MD, renowned psychiatrist, researcher, and author of the New York Times bestseller Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation, as well as Winter Blues.
'There is a tendency for people to imagine that all meditations are the same, but they really are not,' he added.
Dr Rosenthal explained that more 'head-to-head' research is needed to quantify all the differences among the techniques, but they are not identical. 'Every kind of meditation asks you to do something different with your brain.'
Transcendental Meditation (TM) is the technique that Dr Rosenthal has found success with in his practice and his own experience, and has written about in Transcendence.
He explained that Transcendental Meditation involves using a mantra, a sound, which is specifically given by a teacher, and 'you are taught how to use it and that is what enables you to slip into transcendence.
'It is something that you learn by practice with guidance, just like you might learn to swim or to ride a bicycle, or to play the piano. It's one of those skills that many people can acquire, but it just takes practice and guidance to do so.'
Dr Rosenthal added that this is why the meditation technique is learned one-on-one, in person, with a teacher. It is taught in seven steps and includes introductory lectures and several teaching sessions.
'These teaching sessions are the core of the teaching,' he said, where one learns the technique, 'you get guidance, and you're good to go. There is some followup, but, in one week, it is a technique that most anybody can learn.'
