Transcendental Meditation has the power to heal: Lower blood pressure

'By healing, I mean actual physical healing,' said Norman Rosenthal, MD, about the title of his bestselling book, Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation.
In addition to being a New York Times bestselling author, Dr Rosenthal is clinical professor of psychiatry at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He has been in the private practice of psychiatry in the Washington, DC, USA area for over 30 years.
For those who wonder how actual physical healing is possible from sitting down to meditate twice a day, Dr Rosenthal explained.
'Here's the data,' he said, then showed the audience of medical professionals a series of graphs and studies highlighting Transcendental Meditation's ability to reverse the progress of atherosclerosis.
How bad is atherosclerosis, or cardiovascular disease?
Dr Rosenthal answered, 'Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer and cause of disability in the world. In the United States, more than one in three people have been diagnosed with it . . . . One in three of us will die either of a heart attack or stroke. So we're not talking about some small trivial medical problem. This is serious stuff. It's a multibillion dollar cost to everybody if you count the medical expenses, the disability, the time off work, etc.'
The first way Transcendental Meditation prevents and reverses cardiovascular disease is by lowering blood pressure.
Dr Rosenthal explained, 'The arterial system is like your plumbing system; if there's too much pressure in the plumbing system, what's going to happen? The pipes are going to wear down or they're going to burst. The arteries in a way are no different. That's what's going to happen to them.'
The effect of Transcendental Meditation on blood pressure has been very well studied, Dr Rosenthal added.
For example, he cited a meta-analysis of nine published, well-controlled studies involving over 700 subjects with varying blood pressure levels: high, low, or normal. Dr Rosenthal explained that these studies appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Stroke and the American Journal of Hypertension.
The results were clear: Transcendental Meditation lowers diastolic and systolic blood pressures.
Perhaps what is most significant is that the blood pressure is taken in the middle of the day, not directly after meditation.* 'This shows how the effects of meditation carry over through the day,' Dr Rosenthal said.
* Transcendental Meditation is typically practised twice a day, once in the morning and again in the late afternoon or early evening.
