Healthy, Happy Mother and Baby course: Distinguished faculty present practical, time-tested knowledge for women health professionals

The four-part course, 'Healthy, Happy Mother and Baby'—the first in the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Family Health Series—has drawn on a wide range of expertise among both traditional and modern health professionals to offer the knowledge of Maharishi Ayur-Veda health care in the context of mother and baby care. The course provides very practical knowledge and timely solutions in the areas of preconception, pregnancy, delivery, and postnatal care that can be offered by health professionals to prospective parents in every country.

Part One of the course, on preconception, is being offered from 19 to 30 June for women medical doctors, nurses, and other health professionals by the College of Maharishi Ayur-Veda, MERU, Seelisberg, Switzerland.

This course has been developed by an international group of experienced pediatricians, obstetricians, gynecologists, nurses from several countries, as well as aromatherapists and specialists in other relevant aspects of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's holistic integrative approach to health, working with well-known Ayur-Vedic physicians from India, those whose family traditions in Ayur-Veda (Science of Life) date back thousands of years.

Videotaped lectures have been made especially for this course by renowned Indian Vaidyas, the very experienced Maharishi Ayur-Veda physicians. Lectures by Maharishi are also played during the course.

COURSE LEADERS:

Three eminent health professionals leading the course have been instrumental in developing different aspects of the course—Charlotte Bech, M.D., Sophie Beall, M.D., and Margaret Mullins, MSN.

Charlotte Bech, M.D., Denmark

Dr Bech worked in the area of hematology in the Rigshospitalet in Denmark. She also worked as a medical doctor in the field of obstetrics in Tennessee, USA. She has specialized in Maharishi Ayur-Veda and Vedic Medicine since 1983, and is currently running a private clinic in Copenhagen, practising Maharishi Ayur-Veda, with emphasis on fertility, pregnancy, and postnatal care. She is a well-regarded columnist in several national magazines and the author of several books on Maharishi Ayur-Veda.

Dr Bech is Vice President of the European Ayurveda Medical Association (EURAMA). She has taught at the University of Copenhagen Medical School for several years, and is currently teaching advanced Ayur-Veda at the University of Copenhagen.

Sophie Beall, M.D., Switzerland

Dr Sophie Beall is Medical Director of the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Health Centre in Seelisberg, Switzerland.

In 1976, Dr Beall began her studies of medicine in France. Her interest has always been the integration of modern medicine with natural health care. From 1984 to 1989, she did her internship and residency for 5 years at the University Hospital of Toulouse, France. She graduated in 1989 as a medical doctor and specialized in pediatrics, in family medicine, and in public health. Her thesis in pediatrics has received the highest appreciation. She also earned a Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, and Epidemiology applied to Medicine.

Dr Beall's training in Maharishi Ayur-Veda started in 1981 and was completed after a number of training courses in India and Europe, studying under renowned Ayur-Vedic experts (Vaidyas), including from the Asthavaidya tradition of Kerala. She is trained in pulse diagnosis (Nadivigyan), in Ayur-Vedic phytotherapy (Dravyaguna), in Panchakarma (rejuvenation therapy), and more recently in Aromatherapy. She wrote her thesis in Public Health on the reduction of health-care expenses through Ayur-Veda. She has taught Ayur-Veda to physicians and health professionals from all over Europe.

Margaret Mullins, MSN, Certified Pediatric and Family Nurse Practitioner, USA

Margaret Mullins is a nurse practitioner who has been applying Maharishi Ayur-Veda in her clinical practice for over 30 years. She was one of the first Maharishi Ayur-Veda health practitioners to help develop and offer the original Mother Baby Programme for postnatal care, in the 1980s.

Margaret is currently teaching a Maharishi Ayur-Veda course in Women's Health and Pulse Diagnosis at Brandman University's College of Nursing in Irvine, California, USA.

The course organizers gratefully acknowledge other specialists, doctors, and health professionals who have contributed greatly to the creation of the course, and who will be featured in a future article.
