Experts consider benefits, health issues of wireless communication technologies

Three experts explored the topic of electromagnetic radiation—specifically from cellphones, wireless computers, and compact fluorescent light bulbs—in a discussion hosted at Maharishi European University (MERU) in the Netherlands. They highlighted research studies identifying harmful health effects accompanying their use, and offered a number of practical suggestions for shielding and protecting the physiology. They also cited ongoing research in resolving issues.

Dr Thomas Haumann, a German consultant and building biologist (Baubiologist), focuses on making buildings healthy and safe. Baubiology is a relatively new science that deals with the relationship between people and their living environment. Dr Haumann wants to see buildings constructed so that every element supports the health-promoting effects offered by Maharishi Vastu design.

Dr Steve Glickman, technical director for Internet streaming on Maharishi's broadcasting network, previously was the director of engineering for KSCI TV in Los Angles, California. Dr Glickman is licensed by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to operate a terrestrial television broadcast station in the US.

Dr Guenter Rickal is a technician with substantial experience in retrofitting buildings so that electrical applications are safe.

The discussion began with a cautionary note that although the technologies are well developed, the risks associated with the wireless world of cellphones, WiFi-enabled computers, and utility metres have not been adequately addressed.

After collecting data for 10 years the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified cell and cordless phone radiation as possibly carcinogenic to humans. During the discussion at MERU, concerns were raised that a similar risk may apply to wireless computer technology.

One participant, who feels cellphones are both practical and useful, has focused a great deal of attention on techniques to mitigate the risks, which he feels can have subtle effects on the physiology.

In his book Maharishi's Absolute Theory of Defence,* Maharishi Mahesh Yogi states,

'It should be noted that different types of electromagnetic fields in the environment (such as ELF (extremely low frequency) and VLF (very low frequency)) can disturb the harmony between the individual and the Cosmic pulse.' (p 596)

The supreme value of defence, the experts agreed, is in avoiding exposure to anything that would weaken ourselves or disturb anything in the surroundings. It is the only way to ensure that we, our families, and our countries can remain perfectly protected from any kind of outside negative effect.

It was also acknowledged that there are developments in the right direction in addressing these issues, but care must be taken not to exchange one problem for another. If we can take care of the effects of cellphones and wireless technology in the home, this will go a long way in mitigating the problem.

Another new technology which has raised concerns is that used in 'smart metres'. It came out in discussion that these actually operate very differently from cellphones and tablets. They send out a signal to the utility company reporting electrical usage in a home. Some systems send out a signal every minute, some every few minutes. They are a small part of the problem, not the main problem.

In considering the benefits and risks of these various technologies, one of the speakers referred to Maharishi's principle that the most important thing is to be happy, as it generates the interior environment of invincibility, health, and well-being.

Subsequent articles will describe suggestions, such as using a speakerphone, to protect the brain from cellphone radiation; and new research on solutions to electromagnetic radiation.
