At the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre in Bad Ems, Germany, patients are given individualized treatment plans according to their health concerns and goals.

The clinic is one of the foremost of its kind in Europe, offering authentic Ayurveda* in luxury surroundings. One of their main treatments is Panchakarma, described by staff as a profoundly effective programme of detoxification and regeneration. Another specialty of the clinic is a unique form of pulse diagnosis used in Maharishi Ayurveda health care.

Dr. phil. Karin Pirc is the medical director at Bad Ems. She has treated over 20,000 patients since the facility opened in 1993.

'Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis as we're using it in Maharishi Ayurveda comes from a family tradition,' Dr Pirc said. 'The remarkable thing is that it is not taught in India, even in the Ayurveda universities.'

Pulse diagnosis gives Dr Pirc deep insights into what is happening in her patients' health.

She explained, 'What one can read in the pulse diagnosis are different levels within the pulse, each of which has its own story to tell [of] different organ systems. And if one can read all of this in combination then it really helps one gain a lot of information about the health of the patient.'

A patient of Dr Pirc commented, 'Where [Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre] differs from the usual type of consultation is that the doctor here takes proper time to understand the person. One other thing that totally inspired me was this pulse reading where you're told things that have not been mentioned before and which are correct.'

On the basis of the consultation and pulse diagnosis, the patients begin their individualized treatment plans designed by Dr Pirc.

The staff at the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre start their preparations early in the morning. Individual herbal oils are made up each day. Ayurvedic medicinal plants, herbs, and minerals are used in correct proportion, and individual herb and spice preparations are created according to the requirements for each patient.

The clinic's resident Ayurveda expert from India explained the importance of herbs and plants in Ayurvedic medicine.

He said, 'In India we have 8,000 species of herbs and among them 1,500 species are identified as medicinal plants. In that, the most commonly used formulations are [made] with 500 species of medicinal plants. Maharishi Ayurveda is preparing several thousands of formulations according to different individual constitutions.'
