A veteran of the Iraq war, and current student at Maharishi University of Management (MUM), used his summer break to reach out to other veterans, especially those who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

After finishing his military career, James Wilson learned Transcendental Meditation and found it so helpful that he decided to attend Maharishi University of Management, a university that incorporates meditation into its curriculum.

Through a new MUM internship programme, Mr Wilson spent his summer in Washington, DC, working with a branch of the David Lynch Foundation called Operation Warrior Wellness, which aims to provide Transcendental Meditation to veterans, cadets in training, first responders, and active duty military to alleviate their PTSD symptoms.

Said Mario Orsatti, director of special programmes for the David Lynch Foundation, PTSD is one of the military's most pressing problems, especially now that suicides among active duty personnel outnumber deaths in combat.

Mr Orsatti spoke of Mr Wilson's efforts to reach out to veterans affected by PTSD. 'James was inspired . . . to volunteer to come to Washington, DC, with a specific goal to help the military of the United States.'

Mr Wilson helped Operation Warrior Wellness contact the military and veterans organizations. He also inspired media attention through his own story and experience with Transcendental Meditation.

'He was the co-chair of an event we held here in Washington, DC,' said Mr Orsatti. 'He helped to lead that event and it was extremely successful; there was standing room only.'

The event was free for all veterans and gave out information about using Transcendental Meditation as a treatment for PTSD with no side-effects or stigma.

At the event, Mr Orsatti added, 'Dr Sarina Grosswald, the head of research for the David Lynch Foundation, made a scientific presentation' on research showing beneficial effects of Transcendental Meditation in veterans with PTSD, 'and veterans including James Wilson presented their personal stories'.
