Robert Schneider, MD, FACC, a world-renowned expert in natural approaches to heart health, recently toured New Zealand to talk about the latest findings on Transcendental Meditation as an effective and side-effect-free treatment for heart disease and stroke.

'We have already been having a lot of very supportive newspaper articles about his tour,' said Martin Davy, director of Transcendental Meditation and related programmes in New Zealand.

An article in the New Zealand Herald, the largest newspaper in the country, was published in October. The article interviewed Dr Schneider about his most recent research, published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, which showed a 48 per cent reduction in heart attack, stroke, and death among patients with heart disease who were practising Transcendental Meditation.

The article also quotes Dr Schneider:

' ''I wish to tell New Zealand doctors why the American Heart Association is now recommending Transcendental Meditation,'' said Dr Schneider from his home in Iowa, USA. ''My message to the public is simple. Learn TM to lower high blood pressure and reduce heart disease.'' '

In addition to this article, Dr Schneider was interviewed on a morning television show in Wellington. A press release from Canterbury University announced his talk on campus and highlighted the impressive research that Dr Schneider has been involved in.

Also, a senior member of the medical profession in New Zealand wrote a supportive letter to his colleagues encouraging them to hear more about the research linking Transcendental Meditation with reductions in mortality and heart disease.

Dr Schneider's tour, though geared toward the medical profession, also included lectures open to the general public.

The general public in New Zealand seems open to embracing holistic and integrative approaches to health, Mr Davy commented, as gauged by the rapidly increasing popularity of Maharishi Ayur-Veda products in New Zealand.

He concluded that a shift toward openness and preventive medicine seems to be taking place in the country.
