Bob Roth, an expert on the Transcendental Meditation technique, spoke at a series of four live Facebook events this month, as part of a nationwide tour for the ''Move for Minds'' initiative, hosted by renowned journalist and author Maria Shriver.
Move for Minds is an annual event of The Women's Alzheimer's Movement (WAM), founded by Ms. Shriver, being held this year at Equinox health and fitness locations across the US.
The four Move for Minds live events were held in recognition of Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, on June 2 in New York, June 3 in Boston, June 9 in Los Angeles, and June 10 in San Francisco.
Bob Roth was invited to join a panel of experts, organized and moderated by Maria Shriver, ''to discuss evidence-based strategies to prevent the risk factors associated Alzheimer's disease, particularly among women, who are disproportionately more likely to be afflicted by this devastating epidemic,'' he said.
Roth, who has taught Transcendental Meditation for 45 years, is CEO of the David Lynch Foundation (DLF) and author of the new bestseller Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation. DLF is a nonprofit organization that teaches TM to at-risk populations including inner-city schoolchildren, veterans with PTSD, and women and children survivors of violence and abuse.
He spoke about the benefits of a regular meditation practice. In addition, he said, ''Maria Shriver and I discussed a plan to conduct a first-of-its-kind clinical trial on the effects of Transcendental Meditation for reducing the risk factors of Alzheimer's diseases — including reducing high blood pressure, heart disease, and cortisol levels, while improving brain and cognitive functioning. Findings from the study could open the doors for large-scale trials which could transform the way Alzheimer's disease is treated by medical doctors worldwide.''
