Higher consciousness for higher achievement: Brain integration in world-class performers similar to Transcendental Meditation effects
by Global Good News staff writer

5 November 2009
For five years Dr Harald Harung, Associate Professor of Management, Oslo University College, Norway, and Dr Fred Travis, Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition, have been conducting research on world-class performers, to determine the characteristics of those who are the top performers in the world. They found that the high levels of brain integration and psychological maturity these high performers display are the same characteristics developed through the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
The research of Dr Harung and Dr Travis included athletes—at the Olympic and world championship level—who were among the ten best in the world for three seasons. They also researched top-level managers, in business an average of 18 years; and world-class performers in many different fields—government, sports, arts, and music.
The researchers found that the characteristics displayed by these people are the same as those developed through the practice of Transcendental Meditation. 'It is now very clear that through practice, Transcendental Meditation will lead to a very high level of performance, and those who want to improve their performance would be wise if they chose to meditate using Transcendental Meditation,' Dr Harung said.
Dr Harung recently published articles in the management journal, Management Decision, and in a Norwegian journal; the research was also featured in ten web-based media in Norway and Sweden, and on two radio stations in Norway.
The research concluded that top-level managers are different from others, characterized by differences in how the brain works. Describing the research on 4 November,* Dr Harung said that apart from having higher brain integration, these individuals also have a more mature psychology or higher moral development; higher morale; more frequent peak experiences in life; and more 'luck' than the control group—people working at lower levels of performance or administration. These differences are at the basis of the high performers' success, Dr Harung said. 'Both high class businessmen and high class athletes also had greater ability to focus on what was important for the successful results of their action.'
Dr Harung said that this is the future of business, and that 'people are beginning to appreciate the significance of higher consciousness' for higher achievement. He said that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's organizations, universities, and schools are world leaders in developing and propagating higher states of consciousness and brain integration.
Global Good News will feature a second article about Dr Harung's research in the coming days.
* Dr Harung spoke on the 4 November Maharishi Global Family Chat, which is broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
