Following the success of a nine-year study showing a 47 per cent reduction of heart attack, stroke, and death through the Transcendental Meditation Technique—a new study to examine the effects of Transcendental Meditation on the heart itself is beginning.

'This is on yet another aspect of Transcendental Meditation and heart disease,' said Robert Schneider, MD, FACC, director of the Center for Natural Medicine and Prevention.*

Using the latest cardiac imaging technology—quantitative Positron Emission Tomography (PET)—the study will examine how the addition of Transcendental Meditation to standard care for heart disease patients compares with standard care alone.

The new study received funding through 'a [US] federally sponsored competition, for these kinds of comparative effectiveness studies to improve the nation's health care system. . . . There were 20,000 submissions, and only about 800 funded—or about four per cent,' Dr Schneider said.**

The competition 'was part of President Obama's economic stimulus plan,' Dr Schneider added. Encouraging more biomedical research will not only give more jobs to people who do this kind of research, but will support new discoveries about more effective ways to treat people—reducing health care costs, and thereby also helping the economy, he explained.

In coming days, Global Good News will feature more of Dr Schneider's talk, including a discussion of how new advanced technology for cardiac imaging will be utilized in the upcoming study.

*Robert Schneider, MD, is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology; Director of the Institute of Natural Medicine and Prevention at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, and Dean of the Maharishi College of Perfect Health; Director of Health in the national administration of Dr John Hagelin—Raja of Invincible America; and Deputy Minister of Health for the Global Country of World Peace. He co-authored the book, Total Heart Health—How to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease with the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health

** Dr Schneider's report was featured on the 10 December 2009 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
