Research shows EEG indications of restful alertness through Transcendental Meditation and Yogic Flying

Scientific research on Transcendental Meditation and the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, including Yogic Flying, shows EEG indications of stabilization of restful alertness during the practice.

This means that the EEG brainwave pattern associated with restful alertness, which is a quiet, alert state usually seen during Transcendental Meditation, is also seen during Yogic Flying. This indicates the stabilization of restful alertness, the stabilization of Transcendental Consciousness, said Dr Michael Dillbeck, an expert on Transcendental Meditation research and one of the editors of Scientific Research on Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme: Collected Papers, Volumes 5 and 6.

The study, originally published in the International Journal of Neuroscience in 1988, is one of 94 included in Collected Papers Volume 6.

In addition, EEG measurements were taken before the practice and were also taken with participants simply imitating the movements of Yogic Flying. Unlike the EEG patterns of restful alertness found during Yogic Flying, in this case they found no change.
