Dr Girish Momaya, Director of Maharishi Vedic University, Netherlands, continued his recent review of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's contributions to the knowledge of Vedanta, which was the subject of a keynote address given at the 20th International Congress of Vedanta in New Delhi, India.

Titled 'Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Insight into Vedanta: The Ultimate Knowledge of Life and its Application to Bring World Peace—From Philosophy to Science', the keynote address was presented at the congress by Lothar Pirc; Dr Momaya was one of two other distinguished authors who contributed to the paper.*

In his recent review, Dr Momaya explained that Veda is knowing or knowledge, and Vedanta is where the quest to know ends—where 'knowing That, there is nothing more to be known'. It is the highest knowledge, the ultimate knowledge of life.

Most of Dr Momaya's review was devoted to Maharishi's profound contributions in this field. 'Maharishi brought the light of Vedanta to the world through direct experience of Atma, the Self, transcendental consciousness, through his simple, natural, scientifically validated technique of Transcendental Meditation.'

'Maharishi's science of consciousness demonstrates the universality of the experience of transcendental consciousness,' Dr Momaya said. 'Maharishi worked with Vedic experts to revitalize and apply Vedic knowledge in light of consciousness—for happiness, harmony, and peace.'

He gave an overview of some of the main principles of Maharishi's Vedic Science that were presented in the keynote address. The 40 branches of Vedic literature are what Maharishi described as the Constitution of the Universe—the totality of 'all the laws of nature that exist in our life, on our planet, in the universe', Dr Momaya said.

Describing the significance of this knowledge as it relates to Vedanta, Dr Momaya noted the research of Tony Nader, MD, PhD, who discovered the parallels in human physiology for each branch of Vedic literature; for this discovery he was honoured by Maharishi as leader (Maharaja Adhiraj Rajaraam) of the Global Country of World Peace, which guides the teaching of Maharishi's programmes around the world. In the physiology, Vedanta is expressed by the totality of the integrated functioning of the entire central nervous system and the whole physiology.

Development of higher states of consciousness, Dr Momaya said, is the fulfilment of Vedanta. He reviewed Maharishi's description of seven states of consciousness, each with a distinct style of physiological functioning. Beautiful descriptions of higher states of consciousness can be found in many cultures; however these lofty experiences are fleeting or not repeatable.

On the other hand, he said, Maharishi's technologies of consciousness, including Transcendental Meditation, are systematic and reliable. They are based on the refinement of the physical body and nervous system, and because the subjective experience of higher states of consciousness is now open to objective physiological measurement, there is a scientific basis for describing transcendental consciousness, the fourth state of consciousness.

Scientific research into Transcendental Meditation and higher states of consciousness started with the work of Dr Robert Keith Wallace in the early 1970s and continues today, using the most modern technologies to examine brain waves and brain wave coherence—one can immediately see on the screen the experience of transcendental consciousness as a measurable value, Dr Momaya commented.

Global Good News will feature more of the recent report by Dr Momaya and Mr Pirc about the presentation at the 20th International Congress on Vedanta. Mr Pirc went on to describe the practical applications of Vedanta that Maharishi brought out in his programmes and technologies of consciousness.
