'We know that genes can change in their expression,' said Alarik Arenander, PhD, a UCLA-trained neuroscientist with degrees in molecular biology, developmental biology, and neuroscience.

The real question, he said, is how to change gene expression consistently for the better.

Dr. Arenander has conducted pioneering research at the University of California, Penn State University, University of Wisconsin, and Maharishi University of Management.

His years of research have brought the perspective that the practice of Transcendental Meditation 'changes everything', from physical to emotional to mental health. He has even seen evidence that transcending* has the ability to change gene expression.

'How does transcending alter how genetic information is expressed?' Dr Arenander asked.

The answer is provided by a field called epigenetics, he explained. Scientists in this field study gene expression that does not involve changes to (it is above, or on top of) the underlying sequence of the genetic code (DNA).

A recent finding in epigenetics may provide the answer as to how Transcendental Meditation is able to alter the expression of genes. Dr Arenander explained that histones, proteins that help locate and read genetic information, change the way they function depending on a person's lifestyle and experiences.

Our experiences allow the histones to reorganize, he said, and transcending appears to encourage more orderly functioning.

'Now we know,' Dr Arenander said, 'at least the beginning stages of how transcending . . . can have a profound effect on how our genes are functioning, or how we will structure the next day and week and month of our brain and our consciousness.'

This new finding in epigenetics has helped shed light on what scientists who study Transcendental Meditation have long seen.

Dr Arenander added that the finding brings a better understanding of how Transcendental Meditation can make everything more organized and perfectly orderly.

* Transcending: The effortless settling down of the mind to experience quieter levels of the thinking process, eventually going beyond thought to experience pure awareness, the silent, unbounded field of transcendental consciousness, the basis of the mind's activity. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's technologies of consciousness, including Transcendental Meditation, allow the individual to experience the effortless process of transcending in a systematic, reliable, repeatable manner.
