EEG and Transcendental Meditation: 'EEG tells us the most' about what's going on in the brain

One of the great appeals of using EEG imaging to look at the brain during various activities is that, as neuroscientist Dr Alarik Arenander said, EEG 'exposes the mystery of the mind'.

Dr Arenander is specifically looking at the results of EEG imaging during the practice of Transcendental Meditation and what he has found has been dramatic. Very quickly when a person closes their eyes to begin the technique, brain waves immediately become more coherent and sustain that coherence.

For something to change that fast in the brain, you would think it might take some time and effort to coordinate, said Dr Arenander. Especially in the brain fabric, with its dynamic relationship between hundreds of billions of brain cells. The change involves these countless brain cells working together to shift from attending to objects and mental content to a state, during Transcendental Meditation, of quietness with no mental content.

Instead, the shift is effortless and immediate.

Dr Arenander explained that this is because, according to the knowledge of Maharishi Vedic Science, the brain starts all activity from this place of silent coherence. 'All mental thought starts from the level of self-referral consciousness. . . . It is not like we're finding the Self; we are just sort of moving the clouds away; the sun has always been there.'

Dr Arenander added that in addition to the transparency of EEG, it is also one of the most effective ways of getting an up-to-date picture of the brain. 'It tells us exactly moment by moment what's going on across the whole brain instantaneously.'

In the news we often see videos of brain scans, the brain lighting up, and different areas highlighted. While these are fun, said Dr Arenander, 'EEG has always been the one that tells us the most. The EEG will always be valuable.'

Certainly, in the case of Transcendental Meditation, the picture represented by EEG mapping tells a compelling story.
