'In the area of health, atherosclerosis is a very serious problem,' said Dr Michael Dillbeck, International Research Professor at Maharishi University of Management and editor of the recently published Volume 7 of Scientific Research on Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program: Collected Papers.

The volume contains 81 fully reprinted studies from 115 authors and 50 different universities. Many of the studies looked at the effect of Transcendental Meditation on health, and many of the most compelling studies found remarkable effects on atherosclerosis and heart disease.

Dr Dillbeck spoke of one study in particular that looked at the carotid artery in the neck. This artery is a main reason atherosclerosis is linked with strokes, because when the carotid artery is blocked, blood and oxygen cannot travel to the brain.

However, the practice of Transcendental Meditation was found to have a dramatic effect on the thickening of the carotid artery.

A control group who attended a health education course learned all about how to reduce their risk of heart disease through exercise and diet, Dr Dillbeck explained. 'Those who learned Transcendental Meditation showed a reduction of the thickening of the carotid artery, compared to the controls who actually showed a continued increase.'

The duration of the study was nine months. Dr Dillbeck commented that 'just by transcending,* and the physiological changes during Transcendental Meditation, the body began to adjust itself . . . and there was a reduction of the thickening of the carotid artery.'

He added that an additional, but very similar, study looked at the effects of a health programme that included both Transcendental Meditation and Maharishi Ayur-Veda food supplements. Researchers saw a slightly greater reduction in the thickening of the carotid artery.

'This shows,' Dr Dillbeck concluded, 'that an integrated programme that involves both the transcending process, which is an essential and primary element of Maharishi Ayur-Veda, together with the herbal food supplements that also create balance in the physiology, has a very holistic effect.'

* Transcending refers to the settling down of the mind to experience increasingly refined levels of the thinking process, eventually going beyond thought to experience pure awareness, the silent, unbounded field of transcendental consciousness, the basis of the mind's activity. Transcendental Meditation promotes the effortless process of transcending in a systematic, reliable, repeatable manner.
