On 7 May 2018 San Francisco Chronicle reported: California may soon be the first state in the nation to require virtually every new home be fitted with solar panels. Exceptions would apply to houses built in shady areas or new structures that include other sources of renewable power. The proposal is expected to raise the average home cost by nearly $500 annually over the term of a 30-year mortgage . . . However, homeowners are expected to save nearly $1,000 a year on their power bills, officials said.
