1000 Islands Environmental Center in Kaukauna to use goats to combat invasive plants
Appleton Post-Crescent (Wisconsin, US) Translate This Article
5 September 2018
On 5 September 2018 Appleton Post-Crescent (Wisconsin, US) reported:
Goats eat just about anything, and 1000 Islands Environmental Center (Kaukauna, Wisconsin) is taking advantage of that. In late September, 1000 Islands will begin a two-week trial ... using about five goats to combat invasive plant species that are hurting the biodiversity of the environmental center. Goats are a good option because of their massive consumption habits. They are able to process toxins and digest woody plants, said Debbie Nowak, a naturalist for 1000 Islands.
Global Good News service views this news as a sign of rising positivity in the field of science, documenting the growth of life-supporting, evolutionary trends.
Buckthorn, garlic mustard, and honeysuckle are among the plants growing uncontrollably at the environmental center. Others include Japanese barberry and phragmites, also called common reed.
'Native species all have things that control the population from getting out of control,' said Debbie Nowak, a naturalist for 1000 Islands. 'Without natural enemies, (invasive species) become out of control and do not let natural species grow.'
