Estonia's Soviet-era housing finds new eco-friendly future

On 22 July 2019 Deutsche Welle reported: Thousands of apartment blocks across Estonia were built in the 1950s as temporary housing. Now an EU project in Tartu is transforming some into sustainable housing as part of a sustainable cities initiative. The apartments in Tartu will receive new insulation, windows and ventilation systems, as well as new central heating systems and solar panels. 'In 2019 the heat consumption has decreased more than 50 percent,' said [resident Tonis] Eelma, adding that this heating is also now also used to heat tap water and ventilation air. 'The gas consumption has decreased more than 80 percent and we have produced more than three times more electricity [from solar panels] than we consume for general electricity.'
