Turkish, Armenian envoys meet in bid to end chilly relations
14 January 2022 - Special envoys from Turkey and Armenia met in Moscow on Friday [14 January] for a first round of meetings aimed at ending decades of bitterness between their countries and establishing diplomatic ties. Both countries said the meeting was conducted in a 'positive and constructive atmosphere.' (more)

Green Lane NGO monetizes organic farming for women agronomists
20 April 2021 - When Green Lane Agricultural Assistance (Green Lane) NGO launched in 2004 by agronomist Dr. Nune Sarukhanyan, 'green' farming was a new concept in Armenia. Now, after having pioneered participatory approaches to rural development with over 100 completed projects, 'green' farming is practiced by mostly women farmers, and has become a common practice across the three-million populated country that borders Iran, Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. Organic farming, a hope for Armenia?
22 December 2018 - Proponents of organic farming say that this softer way of producing food can help poorer countries achieve several of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. An EU backed Organic Agriculture Support Initiative has been promoting organic farming in Armenia since 2015. Christian Cummins went to find out how it is working. (more)

The country breeding a generation of chess whizz kids
18 February 2018 - Since 2011, all children in Armenia from six to eight years old have compulsory chess lessons. It's the first country in the world to include it on the national curriculum. Armenia now has more than 3,000 qualified trained chess teachers in its schools. Many other countries want to follow suit, according to Smbat Lputian, president of the Armenian Chess Academy. He tells me excitedly about a new chess scientific research institute, due to open in Yerevan (Armenia's capital) later this year, where scientists and psychologists will research the impact of chess in the learning process. Armenia on track to commission 10 MW, announce new utility-scale PV quotas
15 December 2017 - Work has been completed on Armenia's third large-scale solar PV plant. Shtigen LLC commissioned the 1 MW project two days ago in the presence of Armenia's Prime Minister, Karen Karapetyan. All of the projects have owners, [said Shtigen founder and CEO, Hayk Shekyan], which are taking advantage of credit facilities provided by German development bank, KfW. As a rule of thumb, owners invest between 20 to 30 per cent of total project costs, he says. (more)

Russia: Armenian exhibition opens in St. Petersburg
27 June 2011 - An exhibition named Russian-Armenian Spiritual Ties has opened in St. Petersburg. For the first time, visitors will have an opportunity to see books describing the lives and activities of Armenian Catholicoses and books in the history of the Armenian church, which is 1,700 years old. Armenia, China to jointly develop tourism
10 June 2011 - On 10 June, the Armenian government approved the signing of an agreement in the field of tourism with China. Armenian Minister of Economy Tigran Davtyan said the agreement will facilitate an inrush of tourists into the republic and development of bilateral relations in tourism. (more)

Armenia's President to attend match in Turkey
13 October 2009 - Armenia's President said Monday that he will go to Turkey this week for a football World Cup qualifier between the two national teams, returning a gesture by Turkey's President in what has become known as soccer diplomacy. President Serge Sarkisian's announcement followed the signing of an agreement between Armenia and Turkey to establish diplomatic ties and end a century of enmity between the two neighbours. (more)

Armenia and Turkey sign peace deal
10 October 2009 - Turkey and Armenia signed a landmark peace accord on Saturday to restore ties and open their joint border after a century of hostility. Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and his Armenian counterpart Edward Nalbandian signed the Swiss-mediated deal in Zurich at a ceremony attended by US Secretary of State Clinton, European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and France's Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner. Progress reported at Armenia-Azerbaijan talks
8 May 2009 - The Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan made 'serious progress' on Thursday during discussions aimed at resolving their long-standing dispute over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, a US official said. French and Russian mediators at the talks also expressed optimism, saying the two leaders had tentatively agreed to meet again early next month in St. Petersburg, Russia. (more)

A simple daily practice helps reverse war trauma in Armenia: Transcendental Meditation
1 June 2022 - A new documentary film, 'Ending the War Within,' brings to life the moving stories of Armenians who have found relief from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and associated conditions of depression, anxiety, and insomnia resulting from the 2020 Artsakh war. Award-winning filmmaker Tigran Nersisian was drawn to create the new film when he realized that practising the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique had relieved his own depression and unleashed his creative potential. Since early 2021, ArmeniaRecoveryNow has been teaching TM to victims of the war - veterans, displaced persons, children, caregivers. The humanitarian programme was developed through the U.S. non-profit organization Alliance for PTSD Recovery. (more)

Armenia: Students, educators show keen interest in Consciousness-Based Education
1 January 2015 - A series of presentations in Armenia in the past year awakened a new level of interest in Consciousness-Based Education, said Dr Ashley Deans, Executive Director of Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in the USA. Dr Deans visited Armenia during a tour of southeastern Europe and the Middle East. He met with a number of leading educators and education officials in the country, as well as many students. The young people were especially eager and enthusiastic to learn more about Consciousness-Based Education, including the Transcendental Meditation technique, one of its central components. (more)

Armenia: President of MUM speaks at schools, university, national television
12 July 2013 - During a tour this year in southeastern Europe and the region on the border of Europe and Asia, Dr Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management in the USA, visited Ukraine, Armenia, and Georgia. In Armenia he lectured about Transcendental Meditation and Consciousness-Based Education at two secondary schools and a large teacher training university, and was interviewed on national television. He also spoke with many practitioners of Transcendental Meditation. Everywhere he went he found great enthusiasm and interest, often meeting people who learned Transcendental Meditation years ago, when MUM faculty were invited to the country and instructed many thousands in the technique. 19 February 2010 - One of the most prestigious online newspapers in Armenia recently published an article on the Invincible Defence programme of the Global Country of World Peace. After the article appeared, several communities came forward and expressed their interest in establishing a coherence-creating group of Yogic Flyers. (more)

Why Monsanto in Armenia should raise red flags for its farmers
2 November 2017 - The United States Embassy in Yerevan on Wednesday (1 November) organized a business conference focused on Armenia's agriculture sector. 'The goal was to connect Armenian companies involved in the sector with the expertise, products, and technology of well-known U.S. companies Valmont and Monsanto,' said a press announcement from the U.S. Embassy, which also stated that the U.S. companies 'sent representatives to the conference to present their products and services and to learn about business opportunities in Armenia.' Armenian freezes Turkey pact ratification
22 April 2010 - Armenia is freezing its ratification of an agreement to normalize ties with Turkey and reopen their shared border, the Armenian president said Thursday -- dealing a setback to efforts to end the countries' long-standing enmity. Turkey closed its border with Armenia in 1993 to protest the Armenia-backed war by separatists in the Nagorno-Karabakh region; the region is an enclave within Azerbaijan but under the control of Armenian and ethnic Armenian forces. Neither Turkey nor Armenia have ratified the October agreement to restore diplomatic ties. Armenia's governing coalition accuses Turkey of dragging its feet by demanding the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute be settled first. (more)

Russia blockade of Georgia has serious consequences for Armenia
10 October 2006 - Politicians and analysts warn that Russia's transport and postal blockade on Georgia may end up economically isolating Armenia, Georgia's landlocked southern neighbor. The dispute could also deal another blow to Armenia if Moscow cuts its natural gas supplies to Georgia, effectively blocking supplies to Armenia. (more)
