The Bahamas needs your tourist dollars: Here's where you can still visit
10 September 2019 - After Hurricane Dorian tore a path of destruction through the Atlantic, images and stories began to emerge from the Abacos and other Bahamian islands that had been devastated by the Category 5 storm. As these islands begin the slow work of rebuilding, other Bahamian islands remain untouched and open for business. This is good news, as about 60 percent of the country's revenue comes directly and indirectly from tourism. (more)

4 September 2019 - Celebrity chef Jose Andres -- who is famous for his humanitarian feeding efforts in areas stricken by disaster -- made his first trip to the Abaco Islands Tuesday [3 September] with food for those devastated by Dorian. ... Andres tweeted that his organization, World Central Kitchen, is setting up a kitchen on Abaco -- 'where there is a lot of hungry people' -- while his team continues to transfer food from Nassau. Bahamas: BAMSI signs contract with organic farm
22 April 2017 - The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) continues to be an open door to opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Executives of the Institute on Thursday [20 April] signed a contract with proprietor of Rosa Organic Farms Errington Thompson. The contract signals the first organic farm to join the ranks of BAMSI's Associated Farmers Programme (AFP). (more)

22 June 2016 - St. John's College unveiled its new solar energy system last week, making it the first Anglican school in The Bahamas to introduce sustainable energy. ''By installing solar energy, we have reduced our contribution to climate change with the added benefit of significantly reducing the school's electricity bill,' said Kevin Ryan, Chairman. (more)

Bahamas: Praise for creation of youth environment group
17 June 2016 - A leading environmentalist has praised Kenred Dorsett after his ministry's announcement this week of the launch a Youth Environmental Corps training up to 1,200 young people for jobs in the blue and green economies in the Bahamas. Among the key projects mentioned by Mr Dorsett is the proposed new Lake Killarney National Park and the National Hero's Garden. If the Lake Killarney park is approved, it will include nearly 20 acres of walking trails and boardwalks. (more)

The Scottish singer, who enjoyed transatlantic hits in the 1960s with 'Mellow Yellow' and 'Hurdy Gurdy Man', will reveal the composition secrets he once shared with former students, The Beatles, during the week-long retreat. Ocean Thermal Energy will get Bahamas debut
9 October 2011 - Ocean Thermal Energy and Bahamas Electricity have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop two ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) plants in the Bahamas. Upon completion, the two plants will be the world's first commercially viable ocean-thermal plants that produce electricity and potable water, while also providing a site for commercial sustainable food production, Ocean Thermal said. 5 July 2011 - The Bahamas has banned commercial fishing of sharks, awarding protection to the more than 40 species circling the island chain that touts itself as the shark diving capital of the world. Activists cheered the new law. They had demanded more protection for sharks after a local seafood company announced last year that it planned to export shark meat and fins to Hong Kong. The Bahamas attracts $78 million a year in shark-related tourism. (more)

9 June 2011 - Arrivals to The Islands Of The Bahamas in 2010 soared past five million visitors -- only the second time the islands-nation has achieved this milestone -- and now exit surveys conducted by the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation reveal that visitors would recommend the destination to family and friends based on overall guest experience on Nassau and Paradise Island to The Abaco Islands, The Exuma Islands, Harbour Island, and others. 8 September 2019 - By Sunday [8 September], a week after one of the strongest Caribbean hurricanes on record plowed into the archipelago nation of 400,000 people, the capital city [Nassau] faced a wave of thousands of evacuees fleeing hard-hit areas including Marsh Harbour in the Abacos, where some 90 percent of the infrastructure was damaged or destroyed. Some 70,000 people need food and shelter, according to the United Nations' World Food Programme's estimate. (more)
