26 August 2022 - In abandoned silver mine in Pulpi, in Spain's south-eastern Almeria Province, lies a treasure that's not made from any precious metal at all. Instead, what's hidden here is the world's largest geode -- a natural crystal phenomenon that has stunned scientists. The Pulpi Geode is eight metres wide, two metres high and two metres deep. 22 August 2022 - A huge megalithic complex of more than 500 standing stones has been discovered in southern Spain that could be one of the largest in Europe, archaeologists have said. The stones were discovered on a plot of land in Huelva, a province flanking the southernmost part of Spain's border with Portugal, near the Guadiana River. (more)

24 July 2022 - A secondary school and a residents' association have teamed up with Barcelona city council to create a solar energy community with the capacity to grow -- rooftop by rooftop -- across large areas of the city. The solar panels on the roof of Quatre Cantons secondary school in the former industrial district of Poblenou supply power to the school and 30 households in the surrounding area. (more)

22 October 2021 - The Friday commute to school looks a little different for some kids in Barcelona, Spain. Starting at 8 a.m., more than a hundred kids and parents hop on their bikes and hit the road on their way to school and work. Not on the sidewalk or in a bike lane, but in the middle of the street. The system has been dubbed bicibus, or bike bus, and began in the Eixample district of Barcelona in September. (more)

Spain bans plastic wraps for fruit and vegetables to reduce waste
28 September 2021 - Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition is currently drafting a decree which will ban plastic wrap for produce sold in stores weighing under 1.5 kilograms (about 3.3 pounds). The ban will go into effect in 2023. The edict hopes to encourage shoppers to buy in bulk or use reusable packaging. The new decree is also considering ways to make drinking water readily accessible and decrease the use of plastic water bottles. Plastic cups may also be regulated. (more)

Study: Transcendental Meditation strengthens the immune system
17 August 2014 - Does practising the Transcendental Meditation technique help to keep you healthy? A group of researchers at Infanta Cristina Hospital in Spain have published a study which measures the effect of regular TM practice on the immune system. The researchers measured different subsets of leukocytes and lymphocytes--the cells in the blood which help to fight off viruses and bacteria. The scientists stated in their conclusion that the technique of meditation studied seems to have a significant effect on immune cells. (more)

Consciousness-Based Education: A solution to Europe's economic problems?
12 August 2013 - Through Consciousness-Based Education, it is possible for groups of students practising Transcendental Meditation to create a coherent effect in the surroundings, thus reducing social stress, commented a secondary-school teacher from Spain, at the conclusion of a recent course in this educational approach in the Netherlands. Referring to scientific research on such large, coherence-creating groups in different countries, he went on to say, 'That means that we can reduce crime, violence, and conflicts, and at the same time we can enliven creativity and creative intelligence in order to create new projects and even create new jobs.' 24 September 2011 - During a recent one-week conference in Barcelona, Spain, young people from all over Europe who practise Transcendental Meditation were inspired to bring programmes for the individual and society, developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, to college students in their countries. The conference included presentations by experts in Maharishi's technologies of consciousness including filmmaker David Lynch, founder of the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace. Maharishi University of Management signs student exchange pact with university in Madrid
25 March 2011 - A new student exchange agreement between Maharishi University of Management (MUM) and the European University of Madrid in Spain (UEM), a private university, will provide MUM students an opportunity to study abroad. It will also promote collaborative programmes of the two institutions in sustainable business and 'rotating university' projects in other countries, including South Africa. (more)

4 April 2023 - The Sau reservoir, 100km (about 62 miles) inland from Barcelona, has been supplying water to the city and other towns in the north-eastern region of Catalonia for half a century. 12 April 2022 - UV filters absorbed by Posidonia oceanica may have damaging effects on ecosystems, scientists warn. Chemicals found in sunscreen lotions are accumulating in Mediterranean seagrass, a study has found. Scientists discovered ultraviolet filters in the stems of Posidonia oceanica, a seagrass species found on the coast of Mallorca and endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. 13 February 2022 - This year, amid record levels of low or no rainfall at all, farmers in both Portugal and Spain, who are growing produce for all of Europe, are worried that their crops for this season will be ruined. With rainfall levels this winter at one-third of the average in recent years, large swaths of Spain are experiencing extreme or prolonged drought. The situation is similar in neighboring Portugal. 20 July 2020 - The prevalence of the novel coronavirus in Spain has risen three-fold over the last three weeks as authorities struggle to contain a rash of fresh clusters, mainly in the Catalonia and Aragon regions, Health Ministry data showed on Monday [20 July]. 'Where measures have been relaxed is where these clusters appear,' Health Minister Salvador Illa said. 'We're talking about gatherings of extended family and spaces associated with nightlife.'
