'Extremely rare' Roman temple discovered on supermarket building site
30 August 2023 - Sarsina is a sleepy, rural town of barely 3,000 residents straddling the pristine Apennine mountains in Italy's Emilia Romagna region, surrounded by stunning views and grazing sheep. ...And though both locals and holidaymakers would agree that a rustic, slow-paced lifestyle is part of Sarsina's charm, its residents were nonetheless excitedly awaiting the construction of a development including a new supermarket, fitness center, and playground. But it was not meant to be -- at least, not as originally planned. (more)

Buried treasure, including nearly 200 Roman coins, found in Italy
1 May 2023 - Archaeologists in Livorno, Italy, are putting together the pieces of a great mystery that began with a stunning find. While hiking in a cleared area of a Tuscan forest northeast of Livorno, a member of the Livorno Paleontological Archaeological Group spotted a few glimmering coins in the dirt in November 2021. Upon closer inspection and excavation, researchers determined that the find included 175 silver Roman denarii coins. Nearly all were in good condition, making this one of the few hoards of ancient coins found intact, according to the group. (more)

Ancient sacred pool discovery aligns with the stars
29 April 2022 - An artificial lake off the west coast of Sicily was once one of the largest sacred pools in the ancient Mediterranean 2,500 years ago -- and it was aligned with the stars, according to new research. Previously, researchers thought the rectangular lake was a military harbor that participated in Mediterranean trade. But new excavations and research at the adjacent site of the ancient Phoenician island city of Motya revealed it the lake to be the heart of a circular, sprawling, religious sanctuary. (more)

Phoenician 'harbour' in Sicily revealed to be religious site aligned with stars
28 April 2022 - Off the west coast of Sicily lies the remains of the ancient city of Motya. There, a compound of temples and shrines offers a window into the life of Phoenician settlers who journeyed from Lebanon across the Mediterranean in the first millennium BC. While Motya has been studied for a century, the site is still giving up new secrets. Earlier this month a rectangular basin, long-believed to have served as an artificial harbor for protecting naval ships and participating in trade, was revealed to be something else entirely -- a religious site, designed and constructed to perfectly align with the stars. 'I dream of bees': one boy's encounter with a swarm in Sicily led to a lifetime's devotion
14 April 2022 - Carlo Amodeo fell in love with Sicilian [Italy] black bees after being mesmerized by them as a child. He has spent more than 40 years finding and preserving them. Currently, there are more than 250 beekeepers taking care of Sicilian black bees along the western part of the island, as far away as possible from crops sprayed with pesticides. But it was a long journey to reach this point. ... In the early 2000s, Amodeo became the first and only official Sicilian black beekeeper on the National Register of Italian Honey Bee Breeders. An African immigrant's pizza wins global raves -- and overcomes Italian prejudices
10 February 2022 - Ibrahim Songne, an immigrant from Burkina Faso, opened a pizza spot called IBRIS in the Italian town of Trento. He overcame local prejudices -- and now has been named to a list of the world's top 50 pizzerias. Ibrahim's success is hardly due to lack of competition. Two other pizza places sit on the same block and another seven are within minutes' walk. (more)

27 January 2022 - Kilap Gueye and Abdellatif Yakoubou arrived in Italy at two very different moments in history. Gueye left Senegal and reached Sardinia in the early 2000s, where he established himself as a teacher and writer. Yakoubou, from Benin, landed on the island in 2014, at the start of what became Europe's biggest migrant crisis since World War Two. Their paths crossed when they joined 'Nois', a television news show set up by theatre company Sardegna Teatro and local online TV channel Eja TV, to be hosted by migrants and to explore the challenges they face. Italy approves new decree to keep cruise ships out of Venice lagoon
1 April 2021 - Italy's government has ruled that large cruise ships and container vessels must not pass close to Venice's historic centre and should instead dock in a different location to preserve the famed lagoon. 'Anyone who has visited Venice in recent years has been shocked to see these ships, hundreds of metres long and as tall as apartment buildings, passing through such fragile places,' Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said on Thursday [1 April]. Venice bans cruise ships from historic centre
1 April 2021 - Italian authorities have approved a ban on cruise ships entering the historic centre of Venice. The country's culture minister said on Wednesday [31 March] that the decision came in response to a request from UN cultural body UNESCO. Critics argue the ships cause pollution and erode the foundations of the city, which suffers from regular flooding. On Wednesday, Italian ministers agreed that large cruise and container ships would no longer be able to enter the city's Giudecca canal, which leads to the historic St. Mark's Square. (more)

Italy: New study on Transcendental Meditation finds reduction of perceived stress and specific cerebral changes
31 July 2020 - Research conducted at IMT School for Advanced Studies in Lucca, Italy found that even a few months' practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM) has positive effects on psychological well-being, and that these effects are correlated with measurable changes in the brain. In the new study, published in the journal Brain and Cognition earlier this year, magnetic resonance imaging showed that the reduced anxiety levels perceived by those in the TM group are associated with specific changes in the connectivity between different cerebral areas which have an important role in the modulation of emotions and inner states. 4 May 2018 - On Saturday, 28 April, Bob Roth, CEO of the David Lynch Foundation (DLF), and world-renowned pop music star Katy Perry addressed the world's leading scientists and physicians, patients, ethicists and leaders of faith, government officials and philanthropists on the subject of Transcendental Meditation, at the international 'Unite To Cure: A Global Health Care Initiative' conference at the Vatican. The Cura Foundation's 4th International Conference was designed to 'create an open discussion and help speed cures for patients all over the world'. Roth, an expert on Transcendental Meditation, spoke about DLF's work bringing TM to at-risk youth worldwide. The large audience was drawn to learn from distinguished education experts from Italy, the USA, and the UK, all about how Consciousness-Based Education can create 'stress-free schools', transforming the lives of students, educators, and families in Italy. The conference was endorsed by local officials in Milan, including Dr Guido Podesta, President of Milan Province, who gave the introductory speech at the conference, and also spoke in support of Stress-Free-Schools at an inaugural press conference held at the provincial palace. 25 April 2023 - Italy's largest river is already as low as it was last summer, with the winter snow fields that normally save it from drying up over the warmer months having receded by 75 percent, according to the Bolzano climate and environment agency. ...Navigation will soon become impossible if abundant rainfall doesn't arrive soon. Italian economy faces threat from climate change - central bank
20 October 2022 - Rising temperatures risk stunting the growth of the Italian economy over the coming decades, with sectors such as agriculture and tourism among the hardest hit, a Bank of Italy research project said on Wednesday [19 October]. Italy is already feeling the effects of a changing climate and in July, the government declared a state of emergency in areas surrounding the river Po in the north. Italians wait for rain where longest river runs dry
9 July 2022 - On a farm in northern Italy not far from the Adriatic Sea, Giampaolo Bassi's crops are in trouble. 'Salty water is killing the plants because they can't stand such a high concentration,' the 32-year-old says. Giampaolo has had problems with salt in the water before, but not like this. It's all linked to the region's worst drought in 70 years -- the result of a lack of rain and snow since winter and higher temperatures.
