The missing link in the study of black holes? Africa Millimetre Telescope could unlock new secrets
20 April 2020 - Black holes, which trap light and warp the very fabric of space, remain one of the great mysteries of science. But astronomers are hoping that a telescope in Africa could help unlock their secrets. Eli Kasai is an optical astronomer at the University of Namibia, and he is working on a project to bring a millimeter wave telescope to the country, which will be the first of its kind in Africa. Known as the Africa Millimetre Telescope (AMT), Kasai says it could provide the 'missing link in the study of black holes.' (more)

Namibia: Plastic-free environment campaign launched
30 March 2017 - The plastic-free environment campaign for Namibia is an initiative in partnership with the Namibian Chamber of Environment (NCE) and avid environmentalists led by Sophia Swartz (chairperson of the parliamentary standing committee on natural resources management), PDK (one of Namibia's top musical groups), Shakalela and The Dogg (musician and campaign awareness focal person). Through collaboration with relevant stakeholders, the campaign aims to discourage the use of plastic bags by developing mind changing educational strategies and to stimulate discussions around enacting legislation for a plastic-free Namibia. Namibia proposes 'zebra' system for gender equal politics
10 September 2014 - Namibia's ruling party, the South West Africa People's Organisation (Swapo), has not only committed to filling half of its seats in parliament with women, but has also proposed a 'zebra' system whereby if a minister is a woman then the deputy minister must be a man and vice versa. Roles will be switched following each re-election. (more)

Namibia: Scientists find oldest animal-built marine structure
26 June 2014 - A sea creature that looked like a stack of tiny ice cream cones is providing quite a treat for scientists studying the dawn of animal life on Earth. Researchers said on Thursday they found fossils of the oldest-known animal-made reef in Namibia, built by a small, filter-feeding seabed creature called Cloudina 548 million years ago. The discovery indicates that important evolutionary developments were unfolding millions of years before the so-called Cambrian explosion when many of the major animal groups first appeared. It also showed that reef building by marine invertebrates, akin to today's coral reefs, began 18 million years earlier than previously known. (more)

24 June 2014 - Hailing the valuable history between the United Nations and the Namibian people, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Windhoek to 'write another chapter in our cooperation', as he inaugurate the UN House there, which will help enhance the coordination of the world body's activities and agencies working in the country. 24 July 2013 - Namibia, which became independent in 1990, is the first African country to incorporate environmental protection into its constitution. Since then, it's become home to 79 registered conservancies that cover 38 million acres, says the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). (more)

Namibia: International wetlands day to be marked in Karas
31 January 2013 - Namibia will jointly celebrate International Wetlands Day and the World Water Day at the end of March at Rosh Pinah, the Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF) has announced. Namibia is a party to the 1971 Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, known as the Ramsar Convention -- an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for international cooperation on the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Namibia: Textbooks in transit to schools
25 January 2013 - On 24 January, Education Minister Abraham Iyambo announced that almost 1.7 million books had been dispatched to schools across the country. The consignment will ensure that every pupil will have textbooks before the end of 2013, said the minister. The Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) in Namibia has partnered with the government in providing textbooks for Mathematics, Science, and English for grades 5 to 12, as part of its project which spans from 2009. Namibia declared among best places to star-gaze
15 August 2012 - Southern African astronomy buffs have another reason to celebrate -- hot on the heels of the awarding of the greater part of the Square Kilometre Array to the region, comes the news that the NamibRand Nature Reserve in Namibia has been proclaimed as the continent's first international dark-sky reserve (IDSR), meaning that it's one of the best places on earth to star-gaze. The proclamation falls under the dark-sky movement, an initiative of the Arizona, USA-based non-profit International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), which was the first organization and is currently the largest, to embrace this concept. Vast aquifer found in Namibia could last for centuries
20 July 2012 - A newly discovered water source in Namibia could have a major impact on development in the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa. Estimates suggest the aquifer could supply the north of the country for 400 years at current rates of consumption. Scientists say the water is up to 10,000 years old but is cleaner to drink than many modern sources. (more)
