Palau's President Tommy Remengesau said: 'We have to live and respect the environment because the environment is the nest of life.' The US state of Hawaii announced a similar ban that comes into effect in 2021. Other places to announce bans include the US Virgin Islands, where the law takes effect in March, and the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire. (more)
Palau: A tiny pacific nation takes the lead on protecting marine life 14 June 2016 - Unhappy with how regional authorities have failed to protect fish stocks in the Western Pacific Ocean, the small island nation of Palau has launched its own bold initiatives -- creating a vast marine sanctuary and conducting an experiment designed to reduce bycatch (other fish species) in its once-thriving tuna fishery. Palau to phase out commercial fishing 16 February 2014 - The pristine waters around the island nation of Palau will be preserved as a marine sanctuary now that President Tommy Remengesau Jr has decided to ban all commercial fishing. In a keynote address to a UN meeting on 'Healthy Oceans and Seas', Remengesau said that once current fishing contracts with Japan, Taiwan, and some private companies expire, only fishing by island residents and tourists will be allowed in its 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone, according to a report from the Associated Press. Palau creates world's first shark sanctuary 26 September 2009 - The tiny Pacific nation of Palau is creating the world's first shark sanctuary, a biological hotspot to protect great hammerheads, leopard sharks, oceanic whitetip sharks, and more than 130 other species fighting extinction in the Pacific Ocean. Palau is one of the world's smallest countries, with some 20,000 people scattered over 190-square mile (490-square kilometer) archipelago of lush tropical landscapes in the Western Pacific. Its shark sanctuary will shelter more than 135 Western Pacific species of sharks and rays considered endangered or vulnerable, or for which there is not enough data to determine how the species is faring. Palau provides safe, welcoming haven to Myanmar asylum seekers 14 June 2009 - The newcomers on the tiny Pacific nation of Palau are young and in limbo, scared that they'll be arrested if they're sent back to their native land of Myanmar. Most speak no English, but they say they're astounded by the generosity of Palau and its people. 'It's our age-old tradition to receive those in need whenever they somehow arrive on our shores,' President Johnson Toribiong said. The Myanmar asylum seekers say in tropical Palau, one of the world's smallest countries, they finally feel free. 'We are treated as their own siblings,' the group's sole fluent English speaker said.
