Mercedes-Benz Vans plans first electric-only plant in Jawor, Poland
12 December 2022 - Mercedes-Benz Vans will invest more than 1 billion euros ($1.05 billion) to build its first electric-only vans plant in Jawor, Poland, pending approval of conditions such as the sign-off of subsidies for its investment, the company said on Monday [12 December]. The plant will be the fourth in Mercedes-Benz's European van production network, which it is reorganizing towards producing only fully-electric vans built on the VAN.EA platform. (more)

5 August 2019 - A Polish billionaire owner of a brown coal-fueled power station, Zygmunt Solorz, said on Monday [5 August] he would invest in greener sources of energy generation, as a shift away from polluting fuels slowly gathers pace in the country. 'Today we all need clean air... I have already asked the companies which I am involved in to look at what we could do,' Solorz, one of Poland's richest men ... was quoted as saying in an e-mailed statement sent by his spokesman. Poland: Warsaw orders 130 articulated electric buses from Solaris to replace diesel buses
23 July 2019 - Warsaw has placed an order for 130 articulated electric buses from Polish bus maker Solaris in one of the largest European orders for e-buses to date. Warsaw city transport operator MZA ... says that within two years, there will be no more diesel engine buses running on Warsaw's Royal Route, a famed stretch of connecting streets with historical landmarks that runs through the heart of the city. The transport operator says the city will have 400 zero- and low-emissions buses in its fleet by that time. (more)

29 November 2018 - When the Wieczorek mine, one of the oldest coal mines in Poland, closed in March, Grzegorz Chudy noticed for the first time the neighborhood was vibrant with trees in the full bloom of spring. The smell was heady. The Wieczorek mine in Katowice, with its towering brick shaft, is among dozens closing down throughout Poland, home to one of the most polluted coal mining regions in Europe. 26 July 2018 - Authorities in Poland this week banned swimming at over 50 beaches along its Baltic coast, after hot weather led to the toxic growth of bacteria in the unusually warm sea. Baltic Sea water temperatures exceeded 23 degrees Celsius (73.4F) in some places Thursday (26 July). Emergency water rescuers told vacationers on hot sandy beaches -- from Swinoujscie in the west to Gdynia in the east -- not to enter the sea, where thick green-brown cyanobacteria colonies have grown and pose a health threat. Scientists and environmental campaigners have accused the Polish government of bringing the ecosystem of the Białowieża forest in north-eastern Poland to the 'brink of collapse', one year after a revised forest management plan permitted the trebling of state logging activity and removed a ban on logging in old growth areas. Activists warn smog in Poland's top winter resort denser than in Delhi
8 January 2016 - With days to go before the Polish ski season kicks off in earnest, Poland's most popular mountain resort, Zakopane, is choking in smog denser than in India's capital New Delhi, one of the world's most polluted cities, Polish activists said. The European Commission said last month it was taking Poland to court over its slowness to address the issue of poor air quality caused by extensive coal-burning in homes which makes Poland's air the most polluted in Europe and poses a major risk to public health. Air pollution in Poland is felt particularly in the south near ski resort towns such as Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains where homeowners often neglect environmental rules. Climate activists say more than 40,000 Poles die prematurely annually because of poor air quality. (more)

Worst train tragedy in Poland in years kills 16
4 March 2012 - Two trains running on the same track collided head-on in southern Poland in a shower of sparks, killing 16 people and injuring 58 in the country's worst train disaster in more than 20 years. Neighbours in the town of Szczechociny alerted by what they said sounded like a bomb rushed to the scene to smash open windows, and survivors emerged in a state of shock, many crying out for help and carrying baggage. One of the trains was on the wrong track. Maintenance work was being done on the tracks before the accident, but officials said it's too early to determine the cause of the disaster. (more)

Russia could strike Poland over US shield: report
16 August 2008 - A top Russian general on Friday said Poland's deal with the United States to set up parts of a missile defence shield on Polish territory lays it open to a possible military strike, a Russian news agency reported. Col-General Anatoliy Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the general staff, told Interfax that Russian military doctrine would allow for a possible nuclear strike. Washington says the missile system is aimed at protecting the United States and its allies from long-range missiles that could in the future be fired by Iran or groups such as al Qaeda. The Kremlin has long said that was untrue, and has opposed the shield as a threat to Russia. (more)

10 March 2008 - President George W. Bush said he had agreed the United States would help modernize the Polish military as part of a US plan to base components of a global missile defence shield in Poland. Bush's announcement, after White House talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, appeared to mark a major step toward meeting Poland's demand that Washington boost military aid in exchange for allowing the basing of 10 missile interceptors in Poland.
