Oscar-nominated film director David Lynch and other celebrities and peace activists have committed to participate in Creating World Peace Day, a weekend event being organized by Maharishi University of Management and Maharishi School students that will be held September 25-26.

According to student Erin Skipper, the event is a festival to celebrate individuals and traditional cultures that create peace through music and through environmental and social activism. The festival will include speakers and performances, as well as booths representing many different peace organizations.

The event will also address the underlying cause of conflict. A panel that will include faculty members Fred Travis and John Hagelin will present visionary peace-promoting projects such as groups of Yogic Flyers and Vedic scholars. In addition, a weeklong World Peace Assembly will begin that weekend.

Cultural performances will include Salaam, a Middle Eastern band, a performance by Kahraman Near East Dance Ensemble, and a presentation by Jafar Mogadam, a traditional Persian artist, on the history of Middle Eastern culture, art, and politics.

Speakers will include Jeff Weiss of the Quaker organization American Friends Service Committee and Lori Nelson of Iowans for Peace.

The event will begin Friday evening with opening ceremonies and a dance party. Saturday morning will focus on peace in the Middle East. Saturday afternoon will offer outdoor booths, panel discussions, a Yogic Flying competition, African drumming, a presentation by David Lynch, and more. Evening activities will include a concert of Maharishi Gandharva Veda music and classical Indian dance. Sunday afternoon will include tours and group outings. . . .
