Wallace and Marcus coauthor new book on terrorism

A new book that explains in an understandable way Maharishi's Vedic Defense technologies, such as the group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs, is now available in bookstores nationwide.

Coauthored by Robert Keith Wallace, chairman of the Department of Physiology and Health at Maharishi University of Management, and Jay Marcus, a Fairfield, Iowa attorney, the book is titled Victory Before War: Preventing Terrorism through the Vedic Peace Technologies of His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It is available through Maharishi University of Management Press.

The foreword was written by Dr. John Hagelin, director of the University's Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy, and the afterword was written by University President Dr. Bevan Morris.

Defending against Terrorism

According to the authors, the book explains the challenge of defending against terrorists and how Maharishi's Vedic defense is the best solution. 'What is incomplete about conventional strategies of defending against terrorism is the inability to defend everywhere, at all times, against the terrorist who can pick and choose his targets,' Dr. Wallace says. 'Since we cannot reliably defend against the terrorist who may be hiding among us, the only complete defense is to neutralize the violent tendencies of everyone in the community all at once. This is Maharishi's Vedic Defense.'

Danger of Preemptive Approach

In describing the nation's policy of preemptive strikes, coauthor Marcus says, 'Our preemptive approach adopts a football axiom that 'the best defense is a good offense' as its guiding philosophy. But while that may be true in football, where you are either on offense or defense, it's not true in terrorism. With terrorism, the more we take the offensive, the more we invite retaliation, and the more necessary it is to have an effective defense.'

Overcoming Skepticism

A main objective is to overcome the skepticism about Maharishi's approach. 'To be persuasive, you have to make claims that are both true and also have what is known as 'verisimilitude,' which is the quality of appearing to be true,' Mr. Marcus said. 'While the research on the Vedic Defense is solid, most people can't understand how Yogic Flyers in Iowa and Vedic Pandits in India can influence those who may be hundreds or thousands of miles away, which is how the programs work. Presenting Maharishi's knowledge to make this understandable was a principal focus of the book.'

National Distribution

The book is being promoted through many channels in an effort to attract support for Maharishi's Vedic Defense, including a video on Yogic Flying that will be offered to TV stations as part of the book's promotion.

The press will send out almost 20,000 postcards to promote the book. An e-mail version of this postcard is available at the book's website, http://www.victorybeforewar.com>, so everyone can e-mail the postcard to those who should know about Maharishi's program. Vedic Defense Victory Before War describes what causes terrorism, the folly of preemptive strikes, how the Vedic Defense works, the research on the Vedic Defense, the importance of Maharishi's Vedic Pandits and the Maharishi Yagya(SM) program, why Maharishi says the Vedic knowledge is not man-made knowledge, and how especially dangerous times for a nation can be predicted. One chapter promotes Maharishi Vedic City as a model city for the world.

Afterword by Dr. Morris

As part of the book's afterword, Dr. Morris tells the following story: 'I remember a story that was told long ago about a sage. It is the story of a scorpion that goes into the Ganges and starts to drown, and then the sage saves the scorpion and the scorpion stings the sage. Then the scorpion goes back into the water and starts to drown again. Again, the sage goes and rescues the scorpion, and the scorpion stings. After a few times like this, the people looking on are saying, 'What kind of man is this?' And they ask him, 'Why do you keep doing this, when the scorpion keeps stinging?' And the sage says, 'It is the scorpion's nature to sting, but it is my nature to save.'

'I think that this is just the story of Maharishi in the midst of this age, which in India is called Kali Yuga, a time of darkness, violence, stress, and strain that has been going on these last 5,000 years or so. We see the violence in the world—we see people like tigers pouncing—and there is no point in our trying to persuade them not to be tigers, because that is their nature.

'But what Maharishi offers to those in this world who have a peaceful heart, who have a peaceful wish for the human race, is that they just take up this knowledge, and put it in their schools and colleges and universities for the children to rise in peace. The result will be that all of this violent nature that exists in the world will simply disappear. It will just quietly evaporate before our eyes. This is the chance that is before us today—to change the destiny of our human race.'
