Kansas to be home to World Capital of Peace: Small town finds Yogi's disciples 'not so scary'

Mayor Archer and the Smith County commissioners administrative assistant, Charles Sellens, were favourably impressed when they attended the ground-breaking ceremony and met leaders of the World Capital of Peace project. The article reports: 'All were professionals, everything from doctors and lawyers to teachers and engineers.'

Ecologist Kent Boyum, who is the director of government relations for the Global Country of World Peace, said: 'Our intention is to have something very pleasant. There's absolutely no surprise people would have questions about it or be a little afraid. But at the same time, when they actually meet us as individuals, we're just normal people like everyone else.' Mr Sellens remarked that: 'Their commonality seems to be they like this meditation method for dealing with stresses in their life.'

Sellens welcomes the economic boost that the World Capital of Peace is likely to bring to the town. He sites the example of Fairfield, Iowa, where a Maharishi University was established during the 1970s: 'In the past two decades, the Fairfield area has added 300 businesses, doubled its tax base, and added about 2,000 people to its population,' the article reports.

'I have very positive feelings about them being in the community,' Mr Sellens said.

According to Mr Boyum, 'Organizers hope to have the first building in place within three months. In the end, the goal is to have about 300 full-time residents at the World Capital of Peace, with others coming for retreats. Full-time residents will practice Transcendental Meditation and organic farming, but the area will also be open to tourists.'
