Reuters Canada - Canada purchasing activity jumps in Feb -Ivey (5 March 2007) Purchasing activity in the Canadian economy in February grew at its fastest pace since last June, the Ivey Purchasing Managers Index showed on 5 March. The index rose to 60.5 in February from 53.8 in January. A reading above 50 indicates growth in activity. The result topped expectations of a result in the 55-58 range.

The money for Ontario includes its $586-million per capita share of a $1.5-billion fund to help the provinces reduce greenhouse gases. 'It was a very positive discussion on a wide range of issues,' an Ontario government source said. Mr McGuinty plans to use the money from the federal EcoTrust fund for the province's climate-change plan, to be unveiled in late April.

Sun Media - Feds promise 'Toba $53.8 M for electricity sale plan (4 March 2007) Manitoba Premier Gary Doer has a strong ally in his campaign for an east-west power grid. 'The grid would benefit all Canadians,' federal Environment Minister John Baird said, announcing the government intends to provide Manitoba with $53.8 million through Canada EcoTrust, that will be earmarked for projects that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, smog, and air pollution. 'The grid would eliminate two coal-burning electric plants in Ontario with affordable, renewable, and clear energy, and reduce harmful emissions equal to 500,000 vehicles,' said Doer. Some of the money will go to converting diesel plants on reserves to other forms of energy production, including solar and wind power.

Sun Media - Powered by sawdust (4 March 2007) One of 22 new renewable energy projects approved by Ontario this week includes the world's first commercial plant to extract oil from sawdust, producing 2.5 megawatts of electricity for as many as 1,500 Ontario homes. Dynamotive Energy Systems is converting sawdust to 'BioOil', essentially wood oil. BioOil can be extracted from agricultural products as well, so the technology could be adapted to the farm sector.

Canadian Press - Federal government announces more funding for biofuel initiatives (3 March 2007) Ottawa is doubling its funding to help farmers interested in biofuel production to develop business plans or pay for feasibility studies. Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl has announced another $10 million for the federal Biofuels Opportunities for Producers Initiative, created last July. Up to $3 million of the most recent investment will be used immediately to fund dozens of approved projects.

The Toronto Star - Home construction investments hit record (5 March 2007) New housing, renovation, and acquisition costs all increased as total investment in residential construction rose 8.5 per cent to a record $79.8 billion in 2006. Investment in new housing was responsible for the biggest dollar share, increasing 9.2 per cent to $40.7 billion. Construction of single-family homes, up 9.4 per cent to $25.5 billion, and apartments and condominiums, up 13.2 per cent to $9.3 billion, were the major contributors to the increase.

From a Statistics Canada report on this: Investment in residential construction increased 7.4 per cent to $20.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2006, compared to the same quarter a year earlier. Renovation investment grew 8.2 per cent to $8.0 billion, while new housing investment grew 8.1 per cent to $10.6 billion.

The Washington Post - In Canada, the New Rush Is for diamonds (5 March 2007) Today, three mines are open and more are planned, bringing a flush of cash to northern Canada and making the country the third-largest producer of diamonds by value, surpassing even South Africa. The booming industry is replacing the stigma of 'blood diamonds' mined in conflict zones with images of polar bears and maple leaves engraved on snow-pure gems.

The Procedure and House Affairs Committee urged Speaker Peter Milliken to act more forcefully to improve decorum.
