Canadian Press - National net wealth more than $150,000 a head last year: StatsCan (16 March 2007) Canada's net worth, the value of the country's non-financial assets less what Canadians owe abroad, hit $4.9 trillion, or $150,500 per capita, at the end of last year. Statistics Canada says the country's net worth expanded by $131 billion, or 2.7 per cent, in the last quarter of 2006. Much of the gain came in the rising values of homes. On a year-over-year basis, national net worth jumped 9.3 per cent last year, well above the 5.7 per cent growth in 2005.

The Globe and Mail - $6-billion light-rail network to transform Toronto (16 March 2007) Toronto announced a 120-kilometre light-rail network, crisscrossing the city along major avenues in dedicated lanes that would attract almost 70 million new riders, and transform Toronto, the Toronto Transit Commission said.

Canadian Press - Canadian farmers asked to participate in environmental survey (15 March 2007) About 20,000 Canadian farms will be surveyed this month about their environmental practices. The government wants to learn more about how farmers use manure, fertilizer and pesticides, as well as about their land and water management. Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl says the government wants to help producers farm in the most environmentally responsible way, and the results will help improve and create environmental farm policies and programmes.

Canadian Press - Canadian, Danish scientists develop peaceful co-existence over Hans Island (15 March 2007) As diplomats wrangle and soldiers plant flags, scientists are pointing the way to peaceful co-existence over a disputed rump of rock in the High Arctic known as Hans Island. Colleagues from the University of Toronto and the Technical University of Denmark are co-operating on a joint weather station on the world's shortest undefended border. 'There will either be joint flags or no flags,' laughed University of Toronto physics professor Kent Moore.
