Canadian Press - Scientists discover new lichen in BC's rainforest (29 March 2007) Scientists have discovered 13 previously unknown species of tree-dwelling lichens in British Columbia's rainforest. Lichens are leafy organisms that grow on trees and rocks, that endangered species such as the mountain caribou depend on in winter. Toby Spribille, currently based at the University of Gottingen in Germany, and two researchers from BC made the discovery. 'We are definitely looking at a major centre of lichen diversity at a global level that we haven't even begun to fathom or explain,' Spribille said. The team found that the rainforests are home to some of the world's richest tree-dwelling lichen floras.
