The Globe and Mail - Halifax ripe for retail breakthrough (10 April 2007)'There's a lot of growth and opportunity coming forward,' says Mr. Glenn Munro, managing partner, Eastern Canada, with North American Development Group, that is building an 80 hectares $280-million retail power centre. CBC News reports (10 April 2007) An economic think tank says the west will still boast six of the country's eight fastest growing metropolitan areas in 2007. The Conference Board of Canada's metropolitan outlook predicts Calgary and Edmonton will outpace growth in all other Canadian cities for the fourth straight year. The board says the Halifax economy is rebounding on the strength of service-sector growth and a recovery in manufacturing output after posting its strongest growth rate in four years last year, at 2.6 per cent, predicting an even faster rate of 2.9 per cent in 2007, tying Saskatoon and Vancouver as the third-fastest growing cities.

Bloomberg News - Canadian dollar reaches highest this year on bets rates to rise (10 April 2007) Canada's dollar rose to its highest since December, on Tuesday in Toronto. 'The next two to three months look extremely constructive for the Canadian dollar,' said David Mozina, a senior currency strategist at Lehman Brothers Inc. in New York. Canadian employers added five times more jobs last month than what economists forecast, one of a series of first-quarter economic reports supporting the Canadian dollar. 'The domestic economic data have been better than expected, and commodity prices are from stable-to-higher. . .,' said Jack Spitz, director of foreign exchange trading at National Bank of Canada.

Canadian Press - University of Toronto to sell off shares in tobacco industry (9 April 2007) In the wake of the University of Toronto's decision to sell off its shares in the tobacco industry, students at the University of Alberta in Alberto are pushing senior officials to do the same and to institute a policy forbidding researchers from accepting funding from tobacco companies. The University of Toronto's decision will undoubtedly have national if not international implications, said Dr. Charl Els, an addiction psychiatrist and professor at the University of Alberta. 'The damage that tobacco industry connections have done to the credibility of post-secondary institutions has, in my opinion, been immeasurable, so the decision to proceed with divestment will definitely have an impact on other post-secondary institutions.'

Canadian Press - B.C. politicians, native leaders meet to help heal aboriginal health care (10 April 2007) Politicians and First Nations leaders gather in Vancouver Tuesday in an attempt to heal the health care gap for B.C. aboriginals. The province may lead the way in helping First Nations get healthier, but Union of B.C Indian Chiefs Grand Chief Stewart Philip says the gap is still far too wide. One of the forum's goals is to create the B.C. First Nations Health Council, giving provincial aboriginals a lobby group for better health.

CTV News - Waistline measurement a 'new vital sign' (10 April 2007) A landmark new study has identified Canada as the first country in the world to provide comprehensive guidelines to address the management and prevention of obesity. Developed over two years by a panel of experts across the country and published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the study outlines 76 guideline—including urging health care professionals to address the growing obesity issue in this country by measuring the waist of all adults.

From a Toronto Star report on this: 'The new guidelines send a clear message both to health professionals and policy makers that obesity really is a chronic disease and (should) be addressed as a chronic disease,' says Dr. Arya Sharma, a McMaster University medical professor, and one of the report's key organizers, as well as director of the federally funded Canadian Obesity Network.
