'There has been a lot of positive news building up for the currency,' said Camilla Sutton, a currency strategist at Scotia Capital. The Loonie (Canadian dollar) has gained about 4.7 per cent since Feb. 8. The Bank of Canada's commodity prices index reached 206.90 last week, the highest since August. The currency's appreciation accelerated after it moved past its 200-day average yesterday and got a boost today from a report showing new-home prices rose in February more than forecast, evidence the housing market remains buoyant.

The Globe and Mail - Pension plans staging strong recovery, study shows (12 April 2007) Corporate pension plans in Canada are in better shape than they've been for half a decade, and that could help boost the cash flow of some companies that have had to pump money into their plans in recent years, a new study indicates. On average, the ratio of Canadian pension plan assets to liabilities has risen sharply, to 98 per cent at the end of March, from 86 per cent at the beginning of 2006. The funding ratio had languished around the 90 per-cent mark from mid-2002 until near the end of 2006. Darrell Desjardin, director of environmental programs with the Port of Vancouver, said two container lines have already committed to using lower sulphur fuels. 'We've actually seen shipping lines competing against each other to get to a higher classification.' Gary LeRoux, executive director of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities, said other Canadian ports are also considering similar action.

Canadian Press - Canada joins int'l group to fight illegal trade in wildlife (11 April 2007) Canada is joining an international group that fights the illegal wildlife trade, a black market worth US$10 billion a year, that is driving many species to the brink of extinction and threatening global biodiversity. The Coalition Against Wildlife Trafficking, started by the United States in 2005, now includes India, Britain, Australia and 14 conservation and industry organizations.
