Canada has been pushing a proposal to create mutual recognition of national regulators, and Flaherty said that US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson was 'enthusiastically supportive' of the plan in talks on Friday. 'We made some concrete plans today to move forward with this issue as G7 finance ministers.'

The survey is coupled with a decision by the government to launch a Chemicals Management Plan aimed at regulating some 23,000 chemicals produced or imported before 1988, when the government began assessing their risks. 'We have reversed the onus on 4,000 chemicals that are deemed to be at-risk chemicals. We have said to industry that you have to prove ... that they are safe to be included in your product, and if you can't prove that, then you have to start replacing it with something that is safe,' Health Minister Tony Clement said.

Canadian Press - Canada and U.S. agree to new talks on reducing cross-border air pollution (13 April 2007) Canada and the US will start new negotiations to reduce cross-border air pollution, Environment Minister John Baird said. The focus will be on so-called particulate matter, such as airborne particles from smokestacks, that are linked to respiratory problems and heart disease. 'There was a degree of enthusiasm that I didn't anticipate,' said Baird, who announced the talks after meeting with Stephen Johnson, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

From a CBC News report on this: Baird said Canada is ready to pursue air pollution reductions aggressively. 'I'm pleased to see [the EPA] is quite keen to move aggressively as well.' Baird said regardless of the negotiations, the federal government will go ahead with plans to regulate the amount of emissions released by Canadian industry.
