The all-items index rose 3.8 per cent in March from February, and is now 3.2 per cent above the previous record set in December 2006. The agriculture sub-index rose 8.7 per cent from February.

Statistics Canada - The Consumer Price Index (19 April 2007) Between February and March, the all-items index excluding energy increased by 0.3% compared with a 0.6% increase recorded in February. The Bank of Canada's core index, used by the Bank to monitor the inflation-control target, rose by 2.3% compared with March last year, from a 2.4% increase the previous month. On a monthly basis, the Bank of Canada core index posted 0.3% growth in March, slightly slower than the 0.5% increase in the previous month. The 12-month increase in the index for homeowners' replacement cost, which represents the worn-out structural portion of housing, was 6.9% in March. It followed a 7.1% rise the previous month, continuing a slowdown that began six months earlier. A decline in natural gas prices had a moderating impact on the all-items index, continuing a trend observed over the past nine months.

Bloomberg News - Canada's February wholesale sales rise 8 times more than expected on food (19 April 2007) Canadian wholesale sales rose eight times as much as economists expected in February, on higher sales of food, personal care products, and cars. Total sales advanced 0.8 per cent to C$43 billion, the third gain in four months, Statistics Canada said. Sales of personal and household goods led the gain, rising 4 per cent. Food wholesalers' receipts rose 2.4 per cent, while automotive product sales rose 1.9 per cent in February.

From a Reuters Canada report on this: The increase trampled analysts' average forecast of a 0.1 per cent gain. Wholesale trade grew 6 per cent year-over-year in February, more than double the annual rate in January.

The Globe and Mail - Record spending to manage Alberta's growth (20 April 2007) Alberta's new budget includes both record spending of C$33.1 billion and a projected C$2.2 billion surplus for 2007-08. Last year, Alberta's economy swelled by 6.9 per cent, outperforming all estimates, to chalk up the best performance since 1993. Alberta's Finance Minister said that 'no one could have predicted' the strength or pace of the province's boom and the government's spending plan is 'prudent'. The province is also increasing the tax credit for charitable donations that, combined with federal incentives, means Albertans will receive a 50-cent tax credit for every dollar they donate above C$200. Post-secondary students and their parents will also receive education tax credits.

The Globe and Mail - Ministers call for national grid (20 April 2007) Canada needs a national policy to tear down barriers for electricity trade among provinces to fuel the construction of an east-west transmission grid, Kathy Dunderdale, Natural Resources Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, said. Ms. Dunderdale met yesterday with Ontario Energy Minister Dwight Duncan and native leaders to urge the development of a 'green power corridor' that would deliver electricity from hydro and wind power from northern Canada to energy-hungry cities. 'Building an interprovincial green power corridor is as important to Canada today as was the building of the railway in the 19th century by the founders of our country,' Mr. Duncan said.
