'The general conditions are very advantageous for business, with high corporate profits, low interest rates and good optimism by companies,' Haaris Jafri, an analyst at Statistics Canada, said. In the Toronto metropolitan area, builders took out more than a billion dollars in permits, accounting for a 14 per cent gain in March. While both residential and non-residential segments were strong, non-residential permits in the Toronto area were the highest ever recorded for a quarter, up 81 per cent compared with last year. Permits are considered a leading indicator foreshadowing future economic activity. Good job growth in Ontario has helped buoy corporate optimism.

The Ottawa Citizen - Housing starts build in Ottawa (8 May 2007) The pace of residential construction in Ottawa has almost caught up with last year's levels, after a 27 per cent jump in housing starts in April, according to a new housing report issued Tuesday. Last month 490 new homes were started in Ottawa, bringing the total for the first four months to 1,359. That's only 25 units fewer than the same time last year, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Canadian Press - Royal LePage Franchise trust brightens sales outlook after Q1 profit of $912K (8 May 2007) Royal LePage Franchise Services Fund, whose revenue comes from fees from 600 locations of brokers and agents, said Tuesday it has raised its forecast of average house price appreciation this year to eight per cent, compared with its earlier forecast of 6.5 per cent. 'Across Canada, the positive combination of low mortgage rates, healthy employment, strong consumer confidence, and the affordability of housing leaves us well positioned...' CEO Philip Soper said.

Canadian Press - Task force sets aggressive time line to achieve NB self-sufficiency (7 May 2007) A government-appointed task force in New Brunswick makes 91 recommendations to achieve the government's goal of self-sufficiency, including a tax policy that rewards companies that invest in productivity and expand their workforce, implementing an aggressive immigration strategy, and developing a plan to eliminate mandatory retirement. Co-chair Francis McGuire says the New Brunswick of the future will have a job market that is no longer prone to the boom-and-bust cycle of the past.

The Globe and Mail - Green issues drive Manitoba campaigns (7 May 2007) The Manitoba election may be the first provincial vote in which the environment has emerged as a major issue. All three leaders have abandoned the campaign bus in favour of more environmentally friendly hybrid vehicles. They're pledging urgent action to clean up Lake Winnipeg, build more bike routes and offer rebates on green appliances. Premier Gary Doer is quick to point out the economic benefits of embracing a green economy. 'We've gone ahead with wind power ... and we're looking to be coal free in a few years.' Mr Doer is fond of citing the 2005 Business Week magazine survey that ranked Manitoba as the world's top regional government for its response to climate change.

The Calgary Herald - City tourism enjoys record year (8 May 2007) Calgary is set for consecutive record years in the city's key tourism and hospitality industry after a stellar 2006. 'And this year is better than last year. We could put together back-to-back record years,' Tourism Calgary president Joe Fardell said. 'In the month of January, we had some hotels that were at 100 per cent occupancy—in January. That's unheard of.' The stellar performance from the C$1 billion local industry comes as the province's broader tourism sector is enjoying healthy growth and a positive outlook for this year, with province-wide spending forecast to top C$5.5 billion.
