Bloomberg News - Canadian stocks notch 7th record this month as energy producers advance (17 May 2007) Canadian stocks rose on Thursday, lifting the main stock benchmark to its seventh record this month. The TSX Composite Index gained 75.68, or 0.5 per cent, to 14,100.71 in Toronto. The benchmark has risen 9.2 per cent this year. A measure of phone companies, up 1.1 per cent today, has climbed 18 per cent since March 28. Overall, seven of the TSX index's 10 main groups were higher. Reuters Canada - Canada March wholesale trade up 1.9 percent (17 May 2007) Canadian wholesale trade rose by 1.9 per cent in March from February, following a 1.0 per cent month-on-month increase in February. The increase—well above market predictions of 0.5 per cent—is another sign the economy is performing better than expected. 'After showing signs of easing in the fall of 2006, wholesale sales have resumed their upward momentum in recent months, posting gains in four of the last five months,' Statistics Canada said. Half the increase in March was attributable to a 5.5 percent rise in sales of automotive products while there were also widespread gains in the building materials, machinery and electronic equipment and farm products sectors. Sales in the first three months of 2007 rose by 3.4 percent, the best quarterly performance since the second quarter of 2004.

Canadian Press - Inflation rate slipped to 2.2% in April (17 May 2007) Easing gasoline prices slowed Canada's annual inflation rate to 2.2 per cent in April, from 2.3 per cent the previous month. All but three provinces registered an increase that was less than two per cent. Compared with last year, gasoline prices were down 0.6 per cent in April. Natural gas prices declined for the 10th consecutive month, dipping 4.5 per cent nationally and 12.4 per cent in Ontario. Also, the cost of buying or leasing new vehicles fell 1.1 per cent.

The National Post - High-tech recovering (17 May 2007) 'Profit levels for Canadian computer and electronic product manufacturers nearly doubled last year,' the Conference Board of Canada says in a report. Profit margins are forecast to reach 6% this year, which is just below where they stood during the tech boom. Meanwhile, based on its fourth annual survey of software firms, PricewaterhouseCoopers found that firm CEOs continued to predict significant revenue increases for the year ahead. They are just as optimistic about revenue growth this year as they were last year. Nearly 90% of the 115 CEOs surveyed this year expect revenue increases of more than 10%.

The Globe and Mail - Taking notice of socially responsible investing (17 May 2007) A recent study shows that SRI has gained in popularity. Concern about global climate change is a key driver of this trend. 'Just as people are starting to think more about buying hybrid automobiles and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions at home, they're also starting to look at how this can apply to their investment portfolios, ' said Eugene Ellmen, executive director of the Social Investment Organization, a trade association for the SRI sector.

CBC News - Tolls, streetcars and bus lanes in Montreal's future: transit plan (17 May 2007) The city of Montreal has released its ambitious C$8 billion public transit plan. Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay said the plan—the first of its kind for the city—focuses on encouraging sustainable development and public transit use to limit the number of cars on city roads and highways and contain greenhouse gas emissions. 'Today we are making a break with an outdated method for transporting people and goods, and launching a new way of thinking,' he said at a press conference. The plan also includes measures to increase public transit ridership by introducing streetcar tracks on several of Montreal's busiest streets and further expanding Montreal's subway lines. A rail shuttle is also in the works to connect the downtown core to the airport. Reserved bus lanes will be added on several major streets and the city plans to double the current 380 kilometres of bicycle paths.

The Vancouver Sun - Farming Booms In BC (17 May 2007) There are more organic farms in BC than anywhere else in the country. Nearly one in six farms in BC, 16.3 per cent of all provincial operations, now sell organic food, well above the national average of 6.8 per cent. Deb Foote, president of the board of the Certified Organic Associations of BC, says the trend toward organic farming fits well into a new worldwide ethos around doing things green. 'This is an excellent time to be an organic farmer.'

The Toronto Star - Organic optimism (17 May 2007) Greenhouse growers and organic farmers are among the fastest-growing segments of Canada's agricultural landscape, a new study shows. A surprising finding, the report said, is the number of farms (15.5 per cent) within the boundaries of major cities. Some 2,839 farms coexist with the Greater Toronto Area's more than 5 million inhabitants. These urban farms tend to specialize in fruits and vegetables, as well as organic or greenhouse-grown products, which benefit from ready access to large markets and labour pools. New federal regulations will soon make it easier for consumers to identify Canadian organic products in stores. That should help boost local supply.
