The National Post - $10B federal surplus higher than expected (25 May 2007) The federal government reported another fat multi-billion surplus for the 2006-07 fiscal year which ended March 31, suggesting that it remains in healthy financial shape despite its highly touted tax cuts. The surplus was on track to hit nearly C$10-billion, preliminary Finance Department figures show. The surplus is C$500-million more than what was projected in the March budget. Under a government commitment, all of the final surplus will go towards debt reduction, and all the interest savings from that reduction, will be put towards income tax cuts. The report noted that prior to subtracting the C$4-billion in environmental and health care spending announced in the budget, the surplus was a whopping C$13.7-billion, up from the C$12-billion surplus a year earlier. The Toronto Star - TSX closes up; loonie reaches fresh high (25 May 2007) The Toronto stock market put in a solid performance Friday, while the Canadian dollar rolled ahead to another 30-year high. Toronto's TSX composite index closed up 77.8 points to 14,024.07. The Canadian dollar rose 0.45 a cent to 92.64 cents US, its highest close since September 1977. The currency has surged about 8 per cent this year From a Bloomberg News report on this: The Canadian dollar also reached a 15-year high against the Japanese yen at 112.88 yen per Canadian dollar. Canada's dollar is the best performer in the last three months among the 16 most-actively traded currencies on signs that Canada's economy is strengthening.

The National Post - Canada holds its own in takeovers (25 May 2007) Canadian companies planned to acquire almost three times as many foreign companies as vice versa in the first three months of this year, according to a Crosbie & Company quarterly report. 'Canadian companies are far more acquisitive abroad,' said Colin Walker, managing director of Crosbie & Co. 'They are trying to expand into other markets, globalize, and gain scale.' In the first three months of this year, Canadian firms announced the purchase of 134 foreign companies, spending C$22-billion. Foreigners bought 46 homegrown firms, with C$15-billion flowing into the country. From a Globe and Mail report on this: Mergers and acquisitions hit a high in the first quarter. 'The quarter we are in is going to be a new record again,' said Colin Walker.

The Vancouver Sun - BC launches radical forest-sector overhaul (24 May 2007) Victoria intends to remake the coastal forest industry with a new set of policies aimed at shifting harvesting away from old-growth forests to second-growth, Forests Minister Rich Coleman said. Coleman said a new approach is needed because of environmental pressures on the coast's remaining old-growth forests. He described the policies as a major shift for his ministry.

Canadian Press - Canada must do more to raise its profile in the Americas: MacKay (25 May 2007) Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay says Canada needs to boost its profile in the Americas, speaking today at the Canadian Club of Toronto. He says Canada is becoming a leader in the region, but needs to do more. MacKay says Canada is already the second-largest investor in Latin America, surpassing Spain. MacKay says Prime Minister Stephen Harper has asked him to make the Americas a Canadian priority.

Canadian Press - New government office to help foreign professionals get accredited in Canada (24 May 2007) The Foreign Credentials Referral Office is a new project that promises to help foreign-trained professionals have their credentials assessed and recognized even before they arrive in the country, said Diane Finley, minister of citizenship and immigration. FCRO's branch offices have opened in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax and Winnipeg and the government plans to have 320 locations across the country by fall 2007. The services offered at the RFCO's offices include in-person and online information to perspective immigrants on how to get their credentials recognized, as well as detailed information on Canada's labour market and job availability. In an effort to attract foreign skilled workers the government has opened similar offices in China, India and the Philippines.
