The Globe and Mail - Ontario to sign emissions pact (26 May 2007) Ontario will sign a sweeping agreement on fighting climate change with California. California Governor Schwarzenegger and Premier McGuinty are due to sign the accord in Toronto on Wednesday, which includes the provincial government's plan to embrace the state's groundbreaking low carbon fuel standards for cars. Mr Schwarzenegger will also meet privately with Prime Minister Harper in Ottawa and B.C. Premier Campbell in Vancouver as part of his first official trade mission to Canada. Ontario and California will also agree to harmonize their energy-efficiency standards for buildings and appliances. California has signed similar climate-change agreements with B.C. and Manitoba. From a National Post report on this: Governor Schwarzenegger said of his trip to Canada next week, '... We are interested in working with Canada and trying to figure out how we can confront and fight global warming together.'

CanWest News Service - B.C.'s Premier finds environmental soul mate in Schwarzenegger (26 May 2007) Last December, B.C. Premier Campbell, rang up the Governor to chat about ways California might co-operate with the province to combat greenhouse gas emissions. Within weeks, Schwarzenegger's senior environmental adviser was in B.C. to help craft a climate-change plan. By March, Campbell was in California, working with Schwarzenegger on plans to create a system of 'green ports' along the Pacific Coast and to build a network of hydrogen fuelling stations to promote the development of fuel-cell cars. And just last month, British Columbia became the first Canadian province to join the Western Region Climate Action Initiative. 'I think both the governor and I share the belief it is time for us to act,' says Campbell. Campbell sees a natural regional alliance on climate change between B.C., California and other Pacific states. 'I can't imagine today people sitting on the shores of the Mediterranean saying to themselves ''The world is flat.'' But they did,' Campbell notes. 'It was orthodoxy for a long time. And then suddenly people discovered through science and discovery that wasn't the case. The same thing has happened in terms of climate change.'

The Globe and Mail - Riding the hydrogen highway (26 May 2007) When California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visits Vancouver next week, he and Premier Gordon Campbell will be touting the 'hydrogen highway' as a key initiative in the pursuit of a more environmentally sustainable transportation sector. Mr Campbell has an Olympic-sized dream that, in three years, people will be able to hop in hydrogen-fuelled cars and drive all the way from San Diego to Whistler, fuelling up along the road.

The Victoria Times Colonist - High-tech eclipses tourism (24 May 2007) At Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre annual awards dinner, members celebrated the high-tech industry hitting the $1.6-billion total revenue plateau, taking it well past tourism as Victoria's No. 1 non-government industry. They also gave awards ranging from technology company of the year to environmental excellence, celebrating an industry whose companies got to enjoy another year of strong growth.

The National Post - Door open to alternative medicine claims (26 May 2007) Quebec residents may now be able to get a credit for the costs of vitamins, minerals, and health supplements as a result of the latest Tax Court of Canada decision, which may leave the door open for residents of other provinces too. Montreal doctor Barry Breger treated his wife's various medical ailments by prescribing more than $6,500 of medicinal, nutritional, and herbal supplements, the cost of which was claimed on his 2004 tax return. The case specifically looked at Quebec's rules -- the rules may differ in other provinces. The case was heard under the 'informal procedure' process and is therefore not legally binding on other judges (although the decision would be persuasive).

Canadian Press - 3 northern premiers issue document on future for Canada's territories (26 May 2007) Canada's three territorial premiers have jointly released a broad collaborative vision for the North at the Northern Premiers Forum held in Whitehorse. In the document, the governments of Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut outline a future vision of the North with priorities focusing on sovereignty and sustainable communities, adapting to climate change, and circumpolar relations. It invites other governments, as well as non-governmental organizations and the private sector, to offer their contributions to build a more prosperous, sustainable and secure North.
