The Globe and Mail - Housing market keeps record pace (29 May 2007) Canadian home prices, sales and listings continued to set records last month, and the outlook is healthy for the rest of the year. The average price of a resale home jumped 9.3 per cent in April from a year ago to $305,542, the Canadian Real Estate Association said Tuesday, topping the $300,000 mark for the first time. 'The main point here is that over all, the housing market remains remarkably healthy,' said Douglas Porter, deputy chief economist at BMO Nesbitt Burns. Canada's real estate market continues to boom amid low mortgage rates and a historically low unemployment rate. Seasonally adjusted home sales in Canada's major markets was a record 43,643, which was 0.6 per cent higher than the previous record set in January and up 1.5 per cent from March, led by rising activity in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia. 'This builds on strong sales we've seen in the first part of the year and continues the momentum for resale housing that began towards the end of last year,' said Gregory Klump, CREA's chief economist. Sales are forecast to reach even higher levels by the end of the year. Price increases are expected to finish strong this year at 9.5 per cent. 'The year-to-date activity was up 6.7 per cent, and that's a new record for this period of time. It really supports our view that we're going to reach a new annual record this year,' Mr Klump said.

Reuters Canada - Canadian dollar near 30-year high on rate-hike signal (29 May 2007) The Canadian dollar stormed to its highest level in nearly 30 years against the US dollar on Tuesday. A stream of robust economic data recently which suggest the economy is staging a healthy comeback. From a Bloomberg News report on this: The currency rose to 93.17 US cents at 4:39 p.m. from 92.59 US cents yesterday. It reached 93.37 US cents, the highest since Aug. 1, 1977. The currency strengthened against all 16 of the most actively traded currencies, reaching a six-month high against the euro and a 15-year high against the Japanese yen today. Canada's dollar has appreciated 10.2 percent against the dollar since on 8 February. From a CBC News report on this: The Bank of Canada said the economy likely grew at an annual rate of 3.5 per cent in the first three months of the year—a full per centage point above its April estimate.

The Toronto Star - Canada to support 50% cut in greenhouse gases (29 May 2007) Canada will back a firm, long-term target for greenhouse gas emission reductions at next week' meeting of the world's richest nations, Environment Minister John Baird said. 'We'll be very supportive' of a call for a 50 per cent cut in emissions by 2050, when the G-8 leaders meet, Baird told reporters yesterday after a meeting with the provincial environment ministers. Baird would not say whether Canada would join with European leaders and back shorter-term goals, such as the 30 per cent reduction by 2020. Ottawa's recently announced climate change plan rejects absolute targets over the next couple of decades. However, Ontario and several other provinces, including Manitoba and Quebec, want absolute caps on emissions, with targets based on 1990 levels. 'If not, we'll work in partnership with other provinces and, potentially, US states,' Ontario Environment Minister, Laurel Broten, said.

The Globe and Mail - Emerson floats Free-trade prospect (29 May 2007) Canada's ultimate goal in its deepening economic relations with China will be a free-trade deal, International Trade Minister David Emerson said after meeting with Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai. Mr Emerson said he and Mr Bo agreed to try to speed up talks on a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement—a deal that safeguards investor rights in both countries and is viewed as a stepping stone to a full-fledged free-trade accord. Mr Emerson said he thinks Ottawa-Beijing relations are improving, especially after a string of Harper cabinet ministers toured China in recent months. 'Canada has had a position in Chinese hearts and minds that has really given us a privileged opportunity over the years—and to be candid, we have not taken advantage of that privileged opportunity,' Mr Emerson said. China has become Canada's second-largest trading partner and fourth-largest export market.

The Montreal Gazette - Even Quebecers approve tougher anti-smoking legislation: poll (29 May 2007) Even a clear majority of Quebec's famously stubborn smokers—six in 10 surveyed—have concluded that the province's year-old smoking ban within bars and restaurants has improved the health and quality of life of Quebecers, according to a survey conducted 1 May through 13 May by Leger Marketing. With responses from non-smokers added to the mix, the overall approval rating for the tougher anti-smoking legislation was substantially higher, at 78 per cent. Those who most agree with the prohibition are aged 24 to 34, giving it an 83 per cent approval rating. Introduction of the law has induced 10 per cent of Quebec's smokers—151,500 people, according to Leger—to drop the habit.

The National Post - Organic bees may be immune to disorder killing commercial bees (29 May 2007) Organic bees appear to be unaffected by the mysterious disorder that is killing off commercial bees. While the mainstream beekeeping industry has lost up to one-third of its populations, there have been almost no reports of problems among 1,000 organic beekeepers across North America. 'Nobody is talking about colony collapse disorder,' said Sharon Labchuk, a P.E.I. organic beekeeper. 'That's the big thing, when you have organic bees, your bees stay alive.'
