Reuters Canada - Toronto stocks make biggest jump since January (8 August 2007) The Toronto Stock Exchange's main index took a bullish bounce on Wednesday. The TSX composite index logged its biggest percentage jump since January, up 197.62 points, or 1.5 per cent, at 13,758.19. Financials gained for a second day. Adding to the index's buoyancy, the materials, industrials, and consumer staples sectors each marched ahead more than 1 per cent.

CTV News - Climate change tops premiers' meeting agenda (8 August 2007) Climate change, energy, and trade will be the focus of the annual premiers' meeting of Canada, which begins today in Moncton, N.B. The leaders of each of the country's 10 provinces and three territories are going to bring forward their aggressive strategy to deal with climate change. 'We want to work co-operatively together, we want to share best practices and we want to look at ways that we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions,' New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham told CTV's Canada AM on Wednesday. 'I'm sure a number of issues will be put on the table where we will be able to achieve consensus.' A number of initiatives have been put into place so the conference will have a minimal impact on the environment. These include the use of water coolers and reusable water bottles, using overhead projectors and other methods to reduce paper use, serving only local food, and prohibiting vehicles to idle. Premiers and volunteers will also plant 900 trees after the three-day event to offset the carbon impact of the conference.

In the past few months, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia have joined Quebec and Manitoba in establishing emission targets to reduce their emissions below 1990 levels within 5 to 12 years. Premiers will also discuss energy issues such as conservation and energy transportation. Finally, the leaders will talk about initiatives to enhance the competitiveness of the Canadian economy. Graham said this is the first Council of the Federation meeting that 'will unite us, rather than divide us'. 'There are going to be differences of opinion . . . but there's an increasing level of respect and maturity of the council that's occurring, and that's good news for all Canadians today.'

The Calgary Herald - Green highway plan gains traction (8 August 2007) Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach is intrigued by his Saskatchewan counterpart's vision for environmentally friendly highways across the nation. Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert will try to sell other premiers on the plan at a meeting of provincial leaders this week. Calvert and other western premiers expressed their support for the idea of creating ethanol gas stations last month at a meeting in Nunavut. The stations would serve E85 vehicles, which can run on a fuel blend of up to 85 per cent ethanol. 'It is an idea that Ontario is interested in exploring further,' said Chris Morley, spokesman for Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. The pitch also was welcomed by a spokesman for Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald. Hugo D'Amours, a spokesman for Quebec Premier Jean Charest, said Quebec considers the idea to be 'very interesting'. He noted research is underway in the province on how to turn industrial waste, such as that from the forest industry, into ethanol. The enthusiastic responses come as polls indicate Canadians currently rate the environment as a top concern, above even health care.

Canadian Press - Ontario to rate 'green' vehicles (8 August 2007) Commuters and businesses across Ontario are being encouraged to reduce greenhouse gases under three new green transportation initiatives. The province is creating a green vehicle program that will rate cars, light trucks, and commercial vehicles based on environmental criteria. Expected to launch in the summer of 2008, the program will provide incentives for those who buy green vehicles, which will be recognized with an eco-licence plate. The province is also investing C$15 million in a pilot project to help businesses convert to more environmentally friendly technologies such as hybrid power. Ontario will also boost the use of cleaner fuel for its own fleet of vehicles by installing two new ethanol fuelling stations in the province. Environment Minister Laurel Broten says the new facilities could also be made available to municipal fleets.

CBC News - Calgary commuters going green, says study (8 August 2007) Calgary residents may still love their cars, but more are walking, cycling, or taking transit downtown than are driving, according to a new study by the city. The report shows 55 per cent of morning commuters arrive on foot, bike, or transit. That's up from less than 40 per cent a decade ago, said John Hubble, the city's transportation manager.

The Calgary Herald - Bankruptcy business becalmed in booming Calgary (6 August 2007) While most Calgarians have more work than they can handle as the economy drives ahead at a breakneck pace, pity the poor bankruptcy trustees. Canada's Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy says in 2005, there were 3,431 bankruptcies and proposals in Calgary, most of them filed by individuals rather than businesses. That number was 2,248 in 2006--a decline of about 35 per cent. Similar trends are seen across the province. In the 12 months leading up to June 30 this year, insolvencies in Alberta decreased by 24.4 per cent.

The Ottawa Business Journal - Construction intentions gain 11.7% in first half of 2007 (3 August 2007) Ottawa building permit values rose by 11.7 per cent in the first half of the year, as strong growth from the year-earlier period was recorded for multiple-unit residential permit values between January and June. Total residential and non-residential values rose to C$940.9 million for the first six months of 2007, compared to C$842.1 million a year earlier. The residential segment grew by 24.3 per cent to C$505.7 million. In the non-residential sector, there were healthy increases in year-to-date industrial and commercial construction intentions.

Reuters Canada - Canada expands national park in northern wilds (8 August 2007) The Canadian government said on Wednesday it would double the size of Nahanni National Park Reserve in the remote southwest corner of the Northwest Territories, adding new protection for the region's wildlife. Ottawa will add 5,400 square kilometres of land to the park, which now covers nearly 4,800 sq. km. The expanded park will be nearly the size of Jamaica. The park is best known for its deep canyons and Virginia Falls, a cataract nearly twice the height of Niagara Falls. The government said expanding Nahanni would protect the area from commercial development. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978.

The park is home to spectacular mountains and rivers, grizzly bears, lynx, wolves, and other wildlife. 'Canada is blessed with magnificent geography from coast to coast to coast, but none more spectacular than Nahanni Park,' Harper said. 'Today's announcement will ensure that more of this precious land, and the unique wildlife populations it sustains, will be protected for future generations.'
