Canadian Press on housing market reports (15 August 2007) Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. says builders and renovators are expected to continue enjoying boom times in the industry. 'The slight pullback in housing starts this year and next will be mainly due to the continued growth in house prices, coupled with modest increases in mortgage rates,' said Bob Dugan, CMHC's chief economist. Dugan said the rate of new home construction, however, will increase in Manitoba, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. In Saskatchewan, total housing starts are forecast to reach 5,700 units this year, the highest level in 24 years. CMHC also predicted that sales of existing homes will hit a record 514,450 this year, up 6.5 per cent from 2006, and that the price of existing homes will rise by 9.9 per cent this year. CMHC also said renovation spending will increase by 9.8 per cent this year to C$49.9 billion. Home builders are expected to make C$4.5 billion in profits this year, the Conference Board of Canada said in a separate report. 'Strong growth in new-home prices allowed profits to reach record levels last year and continues to boost profits in 2007,' said board economist Valerie Poulin. The average price for a residential dwelling in a major market rose 13.1 per cent year-over-year to C$332,442 in July, the Canadian Real Estate Association reported, the largest year-over-year growth in average price since April 2004.

From a Bloomberg News report on this: Sales of existing homes rose to a fourth straight monthly record in July, the Canadian Real Estate Association said today. The lowest unemployment in three decades led consumers to shrug off reports of trouble in the U.S. subprime mortgage market, the group said.

Canadian Press - High-level Vancouver meeting ends with message 'NAFTA works' (14 August 2007) Trade among the United States, Mexico and Canada has tripled since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed in 1993. International Trade Minister David Emerson, who hosted U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab and Mexico's Secretary for the Economy Eduardo Sojo, said the three worked on ways to take NAFTA a little bit further without reopening it. 'We're simply looking at how NAFTA can, with some seemingly innocuous changes, operate much better, much more successfully . . . . ,' he said. 'For its time, NAFTA was really forward-leaning and well ahead of its time in terms of including labour and environmental provisions,' said Schwab. The three also committed to pushing for movement in World Trade Organization negotiations. 'Last time I saw the prime minister he kept laying more trade agreements that he wanted me to negotiate on me,' Emerson said.

TSX.com - TSX Market Open Celebrates Opening of South Carolina State Office in Toronto (14 August 2007) South Carolina Secretary of Commerce, Joe Taylor, opened the markets Tuesday to celebrate the opening of a state office in Toronto. Canada is South Carolina's top export market. In 2006, Canada purchased more than C$3 billion in products from South Carolina. Trade between South Carolina and Canada supports some 69,000 jobs in South Carolina alone, and bilateral trade between the two totalled C$4.5 billion in 2004. The establishment of a Canadian office will further strengthen ties on both sides of the border.

Canadian Press on motor vehicle sales in June remain strong (15 August 2007) New motor vehicle sales in June remained roughly in line with high levels in April and May, and new motor vehicle sales were up a healthy 4.4 per cent in the second quarter. While sales of new trucks dipped in June, new car sales rebounded 1.4 per cent.

The Globe and Mail - Ontario pledges $30-million for Hamilton harbour cleanup (15 August 2007) Ontario will provide C$30-million towards cleaning up coal tar and heavy metal residue in Hamilton harbour. Premier Dalton McGuinty announced the funding in Hamilton today. He said cleaning up this site is 'important to the quality of life in Hamilton, Burlington and surrounding communities.'

The Vancouver Sun - $22m plan aims to make one million healthier in B.C. (15 August 2007) The B.C. government, in conjunction with an alliance representing nine B.C. health professional groups, government, and non-governmental organizations, announced a new funding initiative worth C$22 million aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles for British Columbians. 'What we want to do now is to create a new social norm,' said Suzanne Allard Strutt, chairwoman of the BC Healthy Living Alliance. It is reaching out to nearly one million B.C. residents, from seniors to school children, including about 575,000 adults living in northern or small rural communities. Many have limited access to safe and affordable recreation and healthy food choices, Strutt said. Strategies include creating better access to vegetables and fruits for low-income families; developing cooking programs for families to help prepare healthier meals; working with schools and municipalities to help children and youth reduce their consumption of sugary drinks and junk food; working with municipalities to create safe, affordable recreation choices, including walking and cycling paths and activity clubs; and working with private companies, schools, bars, and restaurants to promote smoke-free environments. The alliance says that if the program hits its targets, the province could save more than C$1.1 billion annually.
