Thousands of Icelanders want to learn Transcendental Meditation, after recent visit by David Lynch

The recent general parliamentary election in Iceland, amid long-standing economic and social difficulties, reflects the country's anxiousness for solutions. In the days following the election, the nation was thrilled by a visit by Dr David Lynch, the renowned filmmaker and philanthropist, who spoke about creating positive change in Iceland through the practice of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) Technique.
Dr Lynch traveled to Iceland with Raja Tom Stanley, who serves as Raja (Administrator) of Invincible Iceland for the Global Country of World Peace. This organization was established by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Transcendental Meditation Programme, to implement programmes for world peace, national invincibility, economic progress, natural health care, and improved education.
Raja Stanley said, 'David made about six major presentations over the two-day visit,' speaking to full-capacity crowds of civic leaders, media, artists and filmmakers, and the general public. 'He spoke with great passion, and a real connection to the audience.' To a group of 1,500 people—with the crowd overflowing into the lobby—Dr Lynch said, 'You need a legitimate teacher of Transcendental Meditation. Even though it's very easy, you need to be taught. You're given a specific word, a mantra, which turns the mind within, allowing you to transcend. To experience the big, unbounded, eternal ocean of pure consciousness within . . . .' He continued, 'You just need to open the door to the big treasury within. Your life begins to get better and better. Negativity begins to lift away. You'll feel freedom come, things go better, relationships improve . . . .'
In addition to the personal benefits of practising Transcendental Meditation, Dr Lynch and Raja Stanley explained that a coherence-creating group of Yogic Flyers would help bring the country out of its problems. Extensive published scientific research shows that wherever the square root of 1 per cent of a nation's population practises the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, including Yogic Flying, in a group, positive trends increase and negative trends decrease. The research analyzes measurable statistics, such as decreased crime rate and improved economy.
Raja Stanley said, 'Our goal is to teach everyone Transcendental Meditation who wants to learn, and to create invincibility for Iceland by establishing a coherence-creating group. With Iceland's population of 320,000, we only need 58 Yogic Flyers [practising in a group], but we want 200 for safety's sake.'
Dr Lynch and Raja Stanley met privately with top government leaders, who were 'very open to the project'. They also met with an organization of young people interested in new ideas for positive social change. 'They've seen traditional approaches have not produced benefits in an integrated way. They want solutions that will benefit everyone. Their response was very eager. In fact, they are impatient to have this for their country.'
A new Centre has opened in Reykjavik where people can learn Transcendental Meditation, and a working group is being created to implement the programme and raise partial scholarship funds for everyone who wants instruction. Nearly one thousand people signed up for instruction right away, which is a small segment of those who have expressed interest, said Raja Stanley. 'These are leaders of society, business people, students, everyone. The hearts and minds of people are thirsting for this knowledge.'
