The nature of enlightenment: 'Fullness of knowledge, fullness of experience' - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

During the recent Full Moon celebration, the Global Mother Divine Organization* celebrated the Foundation for the Development of Consciousness, one of five foundations offering the organization's programmes around the world.

The celebration was broadcast globally via the Internet on Channel 5 of the Maharishi Channel, on 28 February.

To present the profound knowledge of development of consciousness** brought to light by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Global Country of World Peace, a video was played of a historic address given by Maharishi in 1971. In this address—entitled 'The growth of perception from multiplicity to duality to Unity, proceeding on the path from ignorance to enlightenment, the state of supreme knowledge'—Maharishi defines enlightenment and the path to enlightenment.

Maharishi explained that enlightenment is lack of ignorance. 'It is fullness of knowledge, fullness of experience. One knows everything there is to know; one has experienced everything that there could have been to experience. Life is abundant, infinite, boundary-less, unbounded.

'The path to enlightenment,' Maharishi said, 'is from individual awareness to unbounded awareness.'

Maharishi explained that 'individual perception is perception devoid of the value of unboundedness. The experiencer is not able to maintain his unbounded value. He gets lost in the value of the experience. This is ignorance. This is the state of bondage, where one gets identified with the object of experience and loses the awareness of one's own unbounded status.'

Life in enlightenment, Maharishi said, 'is when the seer maintains himself, and in his own light, in his own unbounded awareness, he enjoys the object of experience. His own light is not overshadowed by the nature of the object.

'When the nature of the Self and the nature of the object are both shining, both in light, then that is the state of enlightenment. The Self in its full glory and the object in its full glory—two fullnesses, 200% of life.'

* 'Mother Divine' refers to the nourishing, evolutionary power of Natural Law lively within all of creation and within the silent consciousness of everyone. ** Maharishi explains that beyond the familiar states of waking, dreaming, and sleeping are four higher states of consciousness—Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, God Consciousness, and Unity Consciousness—each bringing a new dimension of physiological functioning, experience, knowledge, and fulfilment.
