Prisons, schools, and the military throughout the Western hemisphere are increasingly implementing the Transcendental Meditation Programme for the scientifically documented benefits it offers inmates, students, staff, soldiers, and veterans—including reduced stress, improved behaviour, and better relationships.

Reporting on 7 April* about many important new initiatives in North and South America were Dr Robert Roth, National Director of Expansion for the Global Country of World Peace in the United States, and Raja Jose Luis Alvarez, Raja of Invincible Latin America.

Dr Roth showed a video clip from a prison in Oregon, USA, where many inmates and staff are practising Transcendental Meditation. Initial results are very promising, as reflected in comments from inmates and staff. The prison doctor noted that practice of the technique makes people more compassionate, and a prison administrator said, 'TM really gets to what is common to us all—the recognition that most men under our charge want to grow as human beings, and that (recognition) makes us grow as human beings.'

Dr Roth also showed a video clip of a school project in San Francisco, California, USA, where the excellent results include reduced suspensions, improved grades, and improved relationships between staff and students. The principal, reflecting on the pressures of a rapidly changing world for students, said, 'Transcendental Meditation is the tool that would help them [students] deal with everything that is swirling around them.'

On 6 April Dr Roth visited a renowned officers training college in the US, where senior officers expressed great interest in having students and faculty start practising Transcendental Meditation.

This completes the range of offering Transcendental Meditation in the military, Dr Roth commented, as current programmes constitute: training of officers; training for soldiers preparing to go into active duty; programmes for soldiers returning from active duty; and rehabilitation programmes for returning veterans who have become homeless. All of these programmes are a preparation to establish a Prevention Wing of the military.

Also reporting was Raja Luis, who showed photos of the first Prevention Wing beginning in several Latin America countries. One photo showed an entire company of soldiers dressed in battle fatigues with their commanding officers, sitting in perfect rows and practising Transcendental Meditation. Initial evaluation showed that the soldiers are overwhelmingly satisfied with their practice; they are meditating together in the group twice a day as part of their activities.
