First house certified LEED Platinum in Iowa's newest Maharishi Vastu community

Several developments in Iowa, USA are leading the way in sustainable Maharishi Vastu construction.
'Nature creates with perfect efficiency—and Vedic architecture is of course the architecture of Nature, of Natural Law,' said Jon Lipman, AIA, US Director of Maharishi Vedic Architecture. 'Therefore this principle of Nature—to build without waste, with perfect efficiency, without having a negative impact upon the rest of the environment—is really automatically a principle of Vastu.'
Dr Lipman highlighted several initiatives including Abundance EcoVillage* and the Sustainable Living Center now under construction at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa.**
The newest housing development is Jefferson County's Cypress Villages. A long-time teacher of the Transcendental Meditation Programme envisioned 'a community in which every building, every home is built to the highest certifiable standard of sustainability—and in the US that standard is called LEED Platinum.'
The first house has been constructed and has received LEED platinum certification, Dr Lipman reported, 'meaning that it is one of the most sustainable and energy-efficient houses built in America'.
The goal is to make Cypress Villages a net-zero community in terms of energy use. Although the community will be connected to the electric grid, most of the time the wind and solar power generated onsite will feed into the grid. Only at night or when the wind is slow will the community use energy from the grid. Over the course of each year, they will generate more energy than they use.
